Champions League: Proving the Scoreboard Wrong
By: Martha | May 23rd, 2007
According to UEFA’s surprisingly entertaining Champions League blogger (I hope it says that on his business cards), the tests running on the scoreboard in Athens earlier today predicted dire things for Milan: Either a 1-1 draw with goals by Xabi Alonso and clumsy John Arne Riise, who scored for Milan, or a 0-1 defeat, a result achieved despite 10-man Milan holding the Reds to an astonishing 17% of the possession. Shudder. Clearly the scoreboard operator is a wise and cautious Rossoneri fan, terrified of jinxing the team by posting a winning result before the match even begins.
The teams haven’t yet been announced, but I’ll edit the post to include them once they come out. Meantime I’ll make my own crap prediction, and let you offer your own below. I believe there will be a few liveblogs going on around these parts, but feel free to come hang out here once the game starts; depending on the state of my nerves, I’ll probably be around some, as well.
2-1 to Milan with Liverpool scoring first; goals by Pippo and Seedorf (Yes, this is a wild, hopeful guess. You can tell by the fact that I’m saying Pippo will score.)
Edit: Here they are, stolen from Bob. Looks like Pippo gets first crack at it.
AC MILAN: 1-Dida; 44-Massimo Oddo, 13-Alessandro Nesta, 3-Paolo Maldini, 18-Marek Jankulosvski; 8-Gennaro Gattuso, 21-Andrea Pirlo, 23-Massimo Ambrosini, 10-Clarence Seedorf; 22-Kaka, 9-Pippo Inzaghi.
LIVERPOOL: 25-Pepe Reina; 3-Steve Finnan, 5-Daniel Agger, 23-Jamie Carragher, 6-John-Arne Riise; 8-Steven Gerrard, 20-Javier Mascherano, 14-Xabi Alonso, 32-Boudewijn Zenden; 16-Jermaine Pennant, 18-Dirk Kuyt.
