Champions League: Record-Breaking Pippo
By: Martha | December 4th, 2007
With his second-half goal today, Pippo Inzaghi both passed Gerd Muller’s all-time UEFA scoring record and put Milan through at the top of Group D, with room to spare. No matter how much difficulty he has finding the back of the net in Serie A, or how long he has to wait to get another shot with the Azzurri, Inzaghi has always, always been able to score in Europe; the goal today was his 63rd in only 98 European matches.
Though Carlo Ancelotti for some reason refused to rest any of his road-worn midfielders, he did start the match with a defense full of stand-ins: Ċ½eljko Kalac replaced Dida in goal, and he was protected by a back four of Cafu, Wantaway Simic (who went down with an injury and was replaced by Kakha Kaladze), Daniele Bonera and Giuseppe Favalli. Celtic, meanwhile, played with an even more makeshift backline, centered around a couple of guys who would be nowhere near that position had everyone been healthy.
Reading JT’s liveblog over at the Celtic site, it’s clear that, while Milan may have had the bulk of the possession, they weren’t trying to do much with it, and Celtic were very happy to let them stroke the ball around in the midfield. The few attacks that did take place in the first 45 minutes belonged to the Rossoneri, but the first half — played, for the most part, at “painfully slow” pace — ended at a very mellow 0-0.
Despite the fact Milan needed nothing more than a point and, with Benfica leading Shakhtar 2-1 in Ukraine, Celtic were through even with a loss, things picked up a bit in the last 30-35 minutes, and Milan began piling up the chances. Super Pippo missed the best one of the match in the 60th minute when he broke in alone and, thinking the flag was up for offside, generously headed the ball right to Artur Boruc, but he pulled it together and got his record-breaker (and the winner) 10 minutes later, when he finished off a good team move from close range to put Milan up 1-0.
That’s the way it ended, and Milan and Celtic are on to the knockout stages, while Benfica head to the UEFA Cup and Shakhtar, who took six points from their first two Group matches, finish bottom and stay home.

Fuckin’ Pippo. Way to go. The man Cryuff once called a waif has left the rest behind. I love how much everyone hates Pippo. Yeah he dives and is constantly offsides. But what’s more important is that he is a big-time gamer who has a peerless ability to score at crucial times in the biggest matches. Cheers Pippo!

mctalian, he’s the sort of player I just hate, but I can’t help but respect his productivity, and how much he cares about what he does. I’m even happy for him in a mostly ungrudging way today!

Gods in heaven, what a horrible advertisement for Italian football. Or even Italian-Scottish football, although I hope Scottish football is usually a bit more lively than that. And I say this as a dyed-in-the-wool rossonera. BORING. But good for Pippo, nevertheless.

Of course everyone outside of Milan hates Pippo. A guy like that, who doesn’t do anything for 89 minutes and then scores at the 90th to sink your team off the face of the Europe - that doesn’t inspire a lot of love.
I have a secret, which is that I secretly like Pippo. I know I’m supposed to hate him since he scored against my beloved Lyon two years back, but he always comes through for his team. And that’s to be commended.

I’ll say this quietly, but: You guys were watching the wrong match. Shakhtar-Benfica was great!

Ahhh SUPERPIPPO! = ] Love him or hate him, he is the MAN. And no, he doesn’t usually dive, that’s Gila. And the offsides, is usually fractional, seeing as thats just the way he likes to score, hang RIGHT on the line, get a through ball, and stuff it in the back of the net.
But good for him. Hopefully he can keep it up, and maybe start scoring at the San Siro… -_-Posted from

hahah mele419, even as a major pippo fan, i find it hard to agree with that… i think both gila and pippo, “dive” quite a bit, and i put dive in quotes, because most of the time there is contact, but just that they fall down way to easily…

mele i like pippo as I said above, but you need to stop smokin’ whatever you’ve been smokin’ if you think pippo doesn’t dive. he nearly fuckin invented the practice back in 1906, 20 years after he was born the ole’ brilliant fuck.

martha, maybe a re-post of some of pippo’s ex-(or current) WAGs is in order.

Hhhmmmm ….. that’s the most interesting thing I find about Pippo. He’s ‘allegedly’ a noted playboy, but somehow remains incredibly discreet about his conquests. I can barely ever find any gossip or photographic evidence of him with any woman. All I can gather is that his most noted relationship to date is with Samantha de Grenet (check-her-out!), but that ended after a few months years ago and she’s now married with a child. I also read a rumour that the one famous Bobo/Pippo relationship soured 3-4 years ago over some fall out over a woman, but my memory fails me of the facts. (I’m thinking Pippo might have had a ‘pop’ at Elisabetta after Bobo and her split up and Bobo didn’t like it). Anyhow, I’m chomping at the bit if someone has any more gossip!!!!

Gabriel, that’s an excellent idea, I’ll see if there’s one I’ve not featured twice already.
(Julie, I’ve got De Grenet dating Pippo, Totti and Francesco Coco (!); I don’t even think I knew about the Bobo thing — she clearly needs to re-WAGed here.)
