Champions League: Roma Step Over (Geddit?) Lyon
By: Martha | March 7th, 2007
While I only saw the first half, I feel comfortable describing the Lyon-Roma game as “awesome.” In the first 30 minutes, possession was about 75%-25% in favor of Lyon, and yet Roma were up 1-0 and, weirdly, seemed to be controlling the game — it was a fantastic counter-attacking performance by a team that went out and perfectly executed a great game plan. Full credit to Spaletti for having his team ready, and major question marks for Houllier (who, to his credit, acknowledged Roma’s superiority on the day) regarding his team’s approach. I mean, when a team comes out that disheveled and disinterested, is it their fault or their coach’s? I hate to entirely parrot the Sky announcers, but it really was odd that they attacked with like two people in the box, even down a goal. Do they not understand the concept of “knock-out stage?”
Though, really, I should stop complaining about how Lyon played and just be stoked about Roma, because they (at least for the first 45 minutes) were a pleasure to watch. And Mancini’s goal? Siiiiick. More than sick. Though I must say it gets slightly less cool when I read him bragging about the number of stepovers it involved. Dude, shut up and accept the praise gracious. Can you do that for us, please? Thank you.
The next step for Roma? If you ask Totti, it’s the final — after they beat Milan in the quarters, of course.

Oh my, that was an amazing goal. Totti’s wasn’t bad either. That defender had to lose his jock on that.

I also noticed that Totti wants to play Real. Ah, Capello v. Totti, with Cassano there as well. That would be great! Plus, maybe Canna will stick his fingers up Totti’s nose again. Roma v. Milan-blah. See that twice a season anyway. But Roma v. Real would be entertaining, even though Real can’t play attractive football to save their lives.

France is really starting to hate Italia now, hehe. And Dunga, you betta recognizes Mancini!
