Champions League: Strikers? We Don’t Need No Stinking Strikers!
By: Martha | February 21st, 2007
Milan went into Parkhead with a shockingly attack-minded approach, something you don’t expect to see from a)an Italian team playing away, and b)a team with one fully fit striker. But it worked! (Apart from the not-scoring thing.) And they looked pretty damn good, at least during the 60% of the game I watched.
Of course, when I say “pretty damn good” I refer to the team’s ability to keep the ball and defend, and NOT to the work of Gila up front. That man must be happy everyone is assuming he’s not fully healthy, because he looked terrible. (Again, in the part of the game I saw. I suppose he could have been mind-bendingly brilliant during the 40% I missed, but somehow I doubt it.) Apparently part of his injury involves him suddenly having my touch and ability, which is no good for anyone — I mean, apart from one agonizing close attempt the Celtic keeper got a leg on, he couldn’t even settle the ball, let alone put the thing in goal. And, to top off his magnificent night, he was book for diving. Niiiiiice.
Anyway, as far as I’m concerned, a 0-0 result is great, given the quality of the team they were facing and the incredibly hostile atmosphere in which they played — Milan (apart from Gila) should be heading home for the return leg with a ton of confidence.

Can I nominate yesterday as the dullest day in Champions League history? With the one spectacular exception, I nearly fell asleep watching/reading about the other games.
“Halfback passes to center, back to wing, back to center, center holds it! Holds it! Holds it!”

HA! Clint, I will not argue with you on that one, though I also refuse to admit that I fell asleep during the first half of the Celtic-Milan game. No sir. Didn’t happen.

The huge exception was Real Madrid- Bayern Munich. Excellent, excellent game. Wish Roma-Lyon had had even 1% of that energy.
