Chivu to Inter? Maybe?
By: Martha | June 2nd, 2007
Despite Tuttosport’s desperation for him to sign with Juve, Christian Chivu’s most likely non-Roman destination looks to be Milan, not Turin. The defender’s agents aren’t due to meet with Roma about extending his deal until next week, but Inter are waiting in the wings, eager to make the capital club an irresistible offer.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Scudetto-holders are prepared to bundle Walter Samuel, the full rights to David Pizarro (already half-owned by Roma) and £3 million in exchange for the Romanian, who Roma claim they will never let go. They might be willing to rethink that, however, when the return of Samuel is involved: His four years at Roma were amongst the best of his career and, as Chris at the Roma blog points out, despite being a few years older than Chivu, Samuel still has it in him to be one of the best defenders in the world. That said, the last time he was both healthy and on form was so long ago only grandma can clearly remember it, so a deal centered on the Argentine would be a bit of a crap shoot for Roma. (Which may be why some think Fabio Grosso might ultimately be offered in his place. Or Alvaro Recoba.)
Because of his nostalgic love (sucker) for Samuel, Roma Chris is eager for the deal to go through, but only if Inter throw in, say, £6 million instead of the measly little £3 million. Me, I’d do it in a second the way it is, mostly because a)Samuel, despite his glorious history, is miles from that form theses days, and b)Chivu may only be a few years younger, but when Samuel is 32 and Chivu is 29, Inter will be very happy to have the younger man in their back line. (Plus, Chivu is WAY prettier than Samuel.)
