Chivu Moves Closer to Inter
By: Martha | June 6th, 2007
It’s always hard to know how reliable Channel 4’s random, often unsourced, sketchily translated press reports are, but if they’re to be trusted on this one, Christian Chivu’s rumored move to Inter is nearly a done deal.
Last week, the papers were full of stories about Inter’s pending approach for the defender, but at the time everything was on hold pending a meeting between Roma and Chivu’s People to discuss a contract extension. That meeting, apparently, has happened, and the two sides are so far apart in terms of salary — Chivu wants £2.8 million/season, Roma think he’s worth at most £1.7 million — that Roma have reportedly given up a a deal, and are already looking to Germany in search of a replacement.
Though Inter won’t give Chivu everything he wants [Insert clever, nudge-nudge remarks about hookers and drugs here.], their reported offer of a £2.5 million annual salary is a hell of a lot closer than he’s going to get with Roma, so the Romania is unlikely to resist through desperate loyalty to the capital club. In terms of what’s in it for Roma, the deal seems to have evolved slightly from last week’s reports: Though it’s now potentially significantly richer than the previously discussed £3 million, the increase in cash to between £4 million and £7 million seems to reflect the fact that Walter Samuel has, inexplicably, disappeared from the discussion. The full rights to the co-owned David Pizarro are still thought to be headed to Roma, but for some reason they’re no longer going to get former hero Walter Samuel back, something that is likely to sour Roma fans on the deal.
This Samuel is odd to me — I know he’s been great in the past, but he was pretty much crap this season for Inter, and I can’t imagine why they’d want to hold onto him. Perhaps Roma watched some tapes and realized they don’t want the old man any more?

Hmm, maybe Samuel himself has rejected this move. I’ve no idea what Inter are paying him, but I’d guess it’s more than Roma are willing to match. And having experienced both clubs, he might just feel the Inter life is better.

Inter would be paying half of Samuel’s salary(4.5m) according to the deal. I would rather have Grosso coming back anyway, Juan can step in the CB role perfectly.
Barca have offered Belletti, Sylvinho and a lot of cash for Chivu. Not sure about the cash about but the chances are getting very slim he goes to Milan. Roma don’t want to sell him within Serie A.
