Clericus Cup Kicks Off; Many Shout-Outs to the Lord Expected
By: Martha | February 21st, 2007
Though this story is now much less exciting than it was two months ago when we all had images of a Vatican team in Serie A dancing in our heads, the Pope nevertheless is (virtually) hosting the third annual Clericus Cup — a tournament featuring teams of clerics from all over Europe — which kicks off this week in the well-known footballing destination of Bosnia-Herzegovina. While the Vatican itself inexplicably isn’t involved, there is a team of Swiss Guards in the tourney, as well as squads from Austria, Croatia, Italy, Hungary, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia and Spain.
Defending champs Croatia will be looking to retain their title in way that honors the Lord, presumably featuring lots of graceful attack and very little swearing. (Anyone foolish enough to take His name in vain will find himself facing a straight red — no lie.) And, since the best thing about this event is the magnificently weird trophy, one imagines Croatia are seriously fired up about making sure no one — no matter how holy — is able to wrest it from their clutches.
