Cross-Channel Transfer Talks: Matrix to England, Bellamy to Italy?
By: Martha | June 18th, 2007
If today’s papers are to be believed, that Spurs-Wilhelmsson thing we discussed over the weekend (the latest is that the winger is also wanted by Boro) is far from the only topic of discussion between English and Italian clubs these days.
Spurs are most active in the conversation — do you think they just hired someone who speaks Italian and want him to earn his pay? First there was that Shock! interest in Figo, then Wihelmsson and now, supposedly, they’re after the one and only Matrix. (Can you imagine? The nerve of them, trying to take him away!) Injuries have made Tottenham very thin in the center of their defense and, according to that bastion of English news The People, Martin Jol sees Materazzi as the perfect defensive tutor for new, 18-year-old left back Gareth Bale. There’s no word anywhere on how Inter feel about this, but the supposedly offer will be about £3 million, the same price Perugia paid to get young Matrix back from Everton in 1999.
Elsewhere, dread golfer Craig Bellamy is being rampantly linked with a move to Italy, his most eager (alleged) suitors being Roma and Juventus. No longer wanted at Liverpool, Bellamy is now being seen as a potential source of revenue for the club: They’ve reportedly asked interested Premiership clubs for £12 million, despite paying only £6 million for the Welshman 12 months ago. Though neither Italian team is prepared to pay quite that much, both seem willing part with £10 million for the striker or, in the case of Roma, offer a £10 million-valued player in exchange, namely troubled winger Alessandro Mancini. With Spurs looking to strengthen their wide midfield this summer, they’re understandably said to be very interested in continuing talks with Roma. Why Roma would want Bellers, on the other hand, is something only Chris can explain.

So, then, Totters and Bellamy in the same team. Yeah, that should smooth things down - bellamy’s so much lower-profile and less egotistical than Mancini ever was!
[on which subject, so it *is* Alessandro, right? channel 4 keeps calling him Amantino, for some reason...]

I see both pretty regularly, so your guess is as good as mine.
There are several players — mostly Brazilian — who are referred to by multiple names in the press; I think at this point both are correct, if only because he’s stopping complaining. I know Dida’s name isn’t Nelson, but since half of Italy and most of the English-speaking press call him that now, it may as well be.

And yeah, I can’t see anything going wrong with Totti and Bellamy together. Definitely not.

I thought Dida’s real name is Nelson, that is Nelson de Jesus Silva in full.
So what’s his real name actually?Posted from

Crap, I can’t remember. I swear I read a specific refutation of that being his name recently, but maybe it was in a dream. Or maybe I was thinking about Mancini? (Sorry if I’m wildly spreading misinformation, I’ll dig around see if I can find anything specific to jar my memory.)

It’s Alessandro Faiolhe Amantino Mancini….so both
And Roma doesn’t want Bellamy, Liverpool wants to send Roma Bellamy. The English media is crap.

I don’t want to be chauvinistic or anything…
But 2006-2007 started qith a scandal and ended with a WC, A champions League Final, Goldent feet in 2006 AND 2007 + Golden Ball for Fabulous Canna…
That’s alot of golden things going to the boot lately…

IMO the best place to confirm names is probably http://www.gazzetta.it; click on the drop-down menu “calcio” and then “squadre,” and then choose your team.
Once you’re at the team page, click on “Rosa” at the new second top bar. According to those pink pages we all love, it’s:
1] ALESSANDRO FAIOLHE AMANTINO MANCINI
2] NELSON DE JESUS SILVA DIDA
3] MARCOS EVANGELISTA DE MORAES CAFU
3] RICARDO IZECSON SANTOS LEITE KAKA’I threw in Cafu because I didn’t know his middle name is Evangelista (badass), and I included Kaka because he’s kinda been on my mind lately.

Do The People just make up ridiculous transfer rumours involving Spurs whenever they’re bored?

By the way, how is Mancini troubled? He loves Rome.

I’m beginning to suspect The People and Tuttosport are written by the same team, Lisa.
Chris, I’m assuming that’s Roma fan sarcasm? There was a period this year where the papers were full of stories about him wanting to leave (if only, one assumed, to be free of The Great Totti).

Everything that has ever come out of his mouth says he loves it in Rome and he doesn’t want to leave. He and Totti made up last fall and things are gravy. I don’t typically believe a lot of what the papers say unless it’s a direct quote.

There are plenty more. I don’t think he’ll leave for years, if he does. The Brazilian flame blazes strong in Rome and he’s said he wants to be a part of that lineage. Oh, and he’s paid very handsomely and will be getting a raise very soon. That helps.

Well, yeah, but there was also this, which obviously led to the statements in your first link. You obviously are more plugged into the RomaScene than I, I’m just less trusting than you are of “OH I LOVE MY CLUB!” quotes that come out immediately on the heels of reports of discontent — to me they’re often more signs of “You get your ass out there and fix this!” orders more than actual happiness.
And you really believe he and Totti are ok, just because he said so in the paper, and they now periodically touch after goals? Huh. Maybe I’m too cynical for my own good.

On a semi-related note, Doni’s actual name is Doniéber Alexander Marangon.
This may sound like the pot calling the kettle black, but damn, that’s one funny sounding name.
