Don’t Look Now, But Zampa Just Did Something Good
By: Martha | June 30th, 2007
I know it’s difficult to accept the possibility of good news coming out of the crazytown overseen by Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini but, believe it or not, he did something smart yesterday: Palermo have signed Serbian international Bosko Jankovic to a five-year deal. Woo hoo!
Though he’s played a handful of games for the senior international side (and scored twice already), the midfielder most recently impressed at the U21 level: He was a standout performer for the Serbian side that finished second in the recent U21 Championships in Holland. At the upper age of the U21 age limit, Jankovic is already 23 and was being courted by a whole lot of much bigger clubs than Palermo — among others, Chelsea, Arsenal, Valencia and Barcelona were reportedly interest in his services — but chose the Rosanero and a long-term contract over those other, flashier options. And thank goodness he did — the hole left by Corini’s departure is looking a little less massive right now.
Personal terms haven’t yet been revealed, but Palermo spent just over €5 million on the player who, after spending the bulk of his career with the great Red Star Belgrade, played 28 games (scoring nine goals) for Mallorca last season; he’ll be officially announced next week, with dozens of photos from the OCD Palermo photographer surely accompanying the blessed event.

Oh dear. Well, it’s good for Palermo but he was one of Mallorca’s only decent players this season. They’re going to need some signings really badly.
