Empoli-Milan, Or: Depression in the Shape of a Football Game
By: Martha | November 18th, 2006
Well, that was among the most depressing games I’ve ever seen. It’s one thing to see a drab, uninspired Serie A match, but it’s quite another to see such a match featuring one of the supposed leading clubs in the league — I think maybe it’s time to adjust our expectations concerning AC Milan. That’s not to say they didn’t have chances — Oliveira hit the frame of the goal a couple of times, and there were some fleeting, promising moments — but the whole thing was a struggle, pure and simple. This wasn’t a strong team, failing to find motivation and focus against a weaker one. Instead it was a battle of seeming equals, neither of whom could put together an attack or find any rhythm going forward. The whole thing, honestly, was abysmal, with Milan’s million-year-old defense (Cafu, Maldini, Costacurta and Jankulovski MUST be among the oldest foursome ever to start a Serie A match) actually providing the only stability the team could find.
The one saving grace of the whole, dreadful afternoon is that the game wasn’t at the San Siro — imagine the boos, had the home fans been forced to watch that display. At this point, Ancelotti’s departure seems mere minutes away.
