Empoli v Inter: Inter Continue to Roll
By: Martha | December 10th, 2006
After a toothless first half during which Empoli were so careless you wondered how on earth they got so high in the table, this turned into an exciting game.Though Inter’s win was ultimately a convincing one, Empoli pulled it together in the second half and look a solid, exciting team — at least they gave Inter a bit of a battle on their way to victory, which is all we can really ask from Inter’s opponents these days. Until he accidentally (one assumes) played Ibra through perfectly for Inter’s second goal (GREAT finish from Ibra, bad sign for the rest of the league), Empoli captain Ighli Vannucchi was a world-beater for the last 45 minutes, taking on and beating large portions of the Inter defense seemingly every time he got the ball, coming tantalizing close to tying the game at one after a great individual run.
On the Inter side, Recoba came on early in the second half and looked very useful — he wasn’t that involved, but when he was he showed good vision, and his passes really opened things up. Plus, it was his free kick that led directly to Inter’s first goal. It’s an endless refrain when it comes to Recoba, but if he can just bring that consistently, he’ll make Inter even better. On the other side of the coin, though, was poor, poor Adriano. He also came on the second half, and made everyone watching the game profoundly sad. He just looked utterly at sea, several steps behind the pace of the game and unable to even hold the ball up for his team. In the Palermo game, it seemed like he might have turned the corner, but since then he’s reverted to the dismal “form” he’d exhibited to that point. Poor dude.
Also, I’ve watched two game this weekend and seen three cards for diving, each of them richly deserved. I’m not complaining, mind you, just surprised.
