Extremely Suspicious Developments on the Chivu Front

By: Martha | June 22nd, 2007

Nanner or Carles?Though reports of a Barcelona offer for Cristian Chivu started to trickle in early yesterday, they only appeared in earnest last night, after Barca defender Carles Puyol “accidentally” did a knee in a friendly, an injury that will keep him out for several months.

Hmm. Suddenly Roma’s Romanian defender is looking a whole let better to Barca, huh? Nigh-on indispensable, I’d say. Until I see footage proving otherwise, I’m going to assume Chivu is the clever little Tonya Harding behind this incident. Can anyone tell me definitively that there wasn’t a lead pipe involved? Didn’t think so.

According to stories in the Italian press, Barca personnel are visiting Rome today to begin talks, despite not having spoken with Chivu’s agent until yesterday afternoon; they reportedly plan to offer Roma about €15 million for the player, and will propose a four-year deal to Chivu. For their part, Roma officially signed Juan from Bayer Leverkusen yesterday, giving him a four year deal of their own, as well as an annual salary of €3.1 million/year. which, if reports are correct, smashes the club’s wage structure. As a result, they’re no longer up a creek if Chivu disappears, and, would seem more than willing to sell him off the Barca than Inter, if only to avoid having to face him at least twice next season.

(And in a secret mountain hideaway somewhere, Chivu is saying “Eeeeeeexcellent! It’s all going according to plan.”)
