FIGC Decides Not to Fine Fiorentina; Embrace Them Instead

By: Martha | December 3rd, 2007

Everyone loves Zlatan

After yesterday’s home loss to Inter, every member of the Fiorentina team gathered by the entrance to the tunnel to shake hands with their opponents. Inter ended up joining in the scrum of congratulations; it was a fitting conclusion to a great match played in an impossibly emotional atmosphere.

Shortly after the match ended, though, rumors started appearing in the press that the Viola actually might be fined for their gesture of sportsmanship — it was said that the club has requested permission for the unusual closing from the FIGC and had been told no, but went ahead anyway. Whether the rumors were true or not, the moment the praise started coming in from all over football (and rugby), they instantly vanished and the voice of the FIGC joined everyone else’s in support of Fiorentina’s collective behavior.

And, now, they’ve taking it even further. According to an article that just went up on the La Gazzetta website, it’s been decided by the FIGC that, starting as soon as possible — after the winter break, probably — all Serie A and Serie B matches will end as they open: With handshakes between the teams. The details, needless to say, are yet to be worked out, since this is just the league desperately trying to be part of something positive, but the idea is certainly a good one. And I can’t wait to see who gets punched first. My money’s on either Antonio Cassano or David Di Michele.
