Figo Leaving Again. For Real This Time. Seriously.
By: Martha | May 21st, 2007
You know all the talk in the last week or so about how Luis Figo might stay at Inter? How his agents are “working in order to blow up the agreement with To the Ittihad?” And how even the gaffer said he wanted him to stay, as recently as today? Well, never mind — he’s out the door.
According to the man himself, despite the doubts he’s been cultivating lately, “[the] decision to go to Arabia is the right one.” He’s all excited about the clause in his contract that allows him to bail at Christmas if he hates it, and points to that as the main reason he signed for Al Ittihad rather than with an unnamed MLS club. (If that club was RBNY, I never, ever want to know. Thank you.)
In addition to his oft-stated desire to wind down his career at a lower level of play, Figo also finally confesses that one of the reasons he’s leaving is his inability to get along with Roberto Mancini. The quote about Mancini is actually really unclear (”I always respected his decisions, but January was a difficult moment for me. I wasn’t used to feeling distrust, I came here to give [my] best and I felt I wasn’t doing so.” Say what now?), but the fact is the two were seemingly not always on the same page. As I’ve mentioned before, Figo does have a tendency to pout when he’s not playing as much as he’d like — whether that was the only issue or just one of many is unclear, but he’s leaving just the same. Dammit.
Time to start lobbying Dish Network to add an Arabian sports channel, I guess.
