Figo: “Mommy, Mr. Mancini Was Mean to Me!”
By: Martha | February 2nd, 2007
Sigh. You guys know I love Luis Figo beyond all reason, right? (I almost wrote “more than life itself,” but decided that’s not the sort of thing I should be saying out loud.) I also, however, despise whining footballers, and we all know Figo sometimes dips his toe in that pool, as well — witness his petulant refusal to watch from the bench after being substituted during Portugal’s fantastic win over England in Euro 2004. And, now, he’s at it again, telling the press he would have left the club this month were it not efforts of Massimo Moratti. That bastard Roberto Mancini never spoke to poor Figo about his contract at all, refusing to offer even the slightest hint of a grovel.
Needless to say, my soul is being twain in two as I write this but, Luis, my darling? SHUT. UP. Granted, Mancini’s attitude about the whole thing is pretty snotty — “I knew about his situation, but it was a personal choice and it was right for me not to get involved.” (Translation: We don’t need Figo and I wasn’t going to do anything to keep him here.) — but still. You’re making yourself look like a complete ass. Have you not noticed that players who take being underused with class and grace are respected by everyone? The whiners, however, are widely despised. Two words, my man: Antonio. Cassano. Need I say more?

But listen, it’s the first time for Figo that no-one really cares about him. It’s true that he’s getting tired easily, but he hasn’t played the whole ninety minutes for a pretty long time! And he definitely IS very important to Inter – no other player prepares as much goals as Figo.
Inter president Massimo Moratti was truly the only person who wanted him to stay in Italy, but because of his human qualities and not because he really believes in his importance on the pitch.
What I don’t like about Inter is that you’re never sure what’s going on – Mancini doesn’t offends the journalists like Mourinho does, but he never gives any concrete answers – I’d say Antonio. Cassano. is pretty likely to come next year. BTW, they have extended Dejan Stankovic’s contract until 2010, but Mancini’s contract not yet. And if Mancini really leaves, Figo is pretty likely to stay. There’s no future for him at Al Ittihad.
