Figo: Suspended and Abroad, But Rocking the Charity

I have it on good authority that Luis Figo’s sad absence from Inter’s Scudetto celebrations was due not to one-foot-out-the-door jadedness and a disinterested in traveling to a game from which he was suspended, but rather to the fact that his mother-in-law is ill, and he and his family traveled to Sweden to visit her. (In case you were wondering — I couldn’t have been the only one. Right? Bueller?) Despite being away from football, however, he’s been a busy, good-hearted bee, setting up benefits right and left.
First we’ve got the recently announced Fundação Luís Figo (that word’s not a terrible disease, it means “Foundation”) charity football match, which will take place in Lisbon in early June. The big news about this match is less its existence than the fact that both Figo and his old teammate and adversary Zinedine Zidane will be on the pitch, presumably captaining the two teams. Also scheduled to appear are former Barca players Luis Enrique, Sergi and Guardiola, as well as hopefully a slew of other, wildly important people. (On a personal note, I’m greeting this news with even greater excitement than I normally do any mention of the word “Figo,” because I’m actually going to be in Lisbon in June and am determined to go to the game, come hell or high water. Anyone know the web address for the Portuguese Ticketmaster?)
Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, Figo has found himself a far odder bedfellow (nudge nudge): He’s teaming up with Shakira — yes, that Shakira — to open a sporting school in Barranquilla, Colombia. From what I can tell this is some sort of spinoff of his foundation, but as to the questions of why Colombia and, more importantly, why Shakira, your guess is as good as mine. I just hope the school plans to offer a belly-dancing sub-academy alongside that whole football thing.

Martha, Click below for the website of Figo’s bar in Vilamoura, Algarve. They will have tickets for this event, it is where I got mine a few years back for the game in Algarve. If you cannot make it there, I’m sure they will know where you can buy the tickets on-line or in Lisbon. Try to go to the bar though, because Figo will surely go there, he always does during the All-star tournaments. Have fun.

Nice, thanks Soze! (It’s in the Algarve? That’s so far freaking far away from Lisbon. Maybe he’ll find somewhere close to the match to roost this time.)

I was so excited when I heard about this charity match, as I will be in Portugal around that time as well. Hopefully I can get tickets. *crosses fingers*

Muddia I’m actually going to be only in Lisbon this time. (For two months! Woo hoo!) Going back to Italy is next on my list, though, that’s for damn sure.

Martha,if that charity game is to be played in lisbon, for sure i know where Figo will be along with his friends, at least i know Figo himself will be there for sure as he had previously lived there in his playing days with sporting lisbon and gave the house to his dad when he departed to play for barcelona.I was just in lisbon for new year’s and spent some time with my uncle who lives 3 houses away on same street from Figo’s dad’s place and curiously enough saw Figo’s dad 9:30 one morning and we had an interesting short talk as he was doing backyard chores. My uncle also told me that he knows when Figo is over his dad’s place ,when he sees Figo’s mercedes benz parked in front of the house.I thought maybe that i would see him due to new year’s festivities ,but i didn’t,if i am not mistaken he was in saudi arabia with inter at the time.

So, if I asked where in Lisbon this was, how terrifyingly stalker-ish would that be, exactly?
