Figo Watch: He Speaks! Finally!
By: Martha | January 11th, 2007
After leaving us hanging for weeks and weeks, Luis Figo has finally talked publicly about his summer move to Saudi Arabia, where he will live in a house made of money and drive a money car. Despite the fact that he reportedly went to Inter with Al Ittihad’s offer and asked them to match it, the Portugese insists his departure for the Middle East has nothing to do with his paycheck. (He also has some swampland in Arizona he’d like to sell you.) In an interview today with Gazzetta dello Sport, Figo swears he’s joining Al Ittihad because it’s “a soft solution.” He doesn’t want to retire just yet, you see, and by going to Saudia Arabia he can “play another five or six months of light soccer.” And I’m sure everyone in the Saudi league is loving that description — my man better pack his industrial strength shin guards.
Irritatingly, mixed in with his (charming) lies about his reasons for leaving, Figo also mentions that he was interested in ending his career in the US, choosing Al Ittihad over an American club only because the former deal will allow him to retire in December. Sigh. Really, I’d rather not have known how close he was to coming here, thanks. That only makes all of this worse.

lol. somebody got up on the wrong side of the bed this morning!
Lets be realistic here. When was the last time a player publically cited leaving a team for more money?
With no disrespect to the Saudi league, the skill level there cannot be compared to Serie A. Figo will have an easier time making an impact than in Serie A. His comments are obvious to all. And while as a writer you try to add some ’spice’ to your story, your humourless sarcasm and ridiculous mention of lies appear more like the work of a spitefull, unimaginative hack.

I’ve always been a hack, and am frequently spiteful and unimaginative, too — guilty as charged. If you click on the “Figo” category, however, you’ll see my affection for him is beyond all reason. Which, really, probably makes me even more spiteful.
We should all just be happy I’m not writing about Beckham’s MLS deal …

lol
whoa, lotsa Figo articles, but all about a possible transfer. Surely there’s more interesting things to discuss, heck I’d be more interested in how he likes to top his french fries! Mayo, ketchup, other?250 million for Becks is a steal, no? Anyway, I am most happy he is coming to MLS. I have received e-mail links from people who normally only talk football (soccer) every 2 years. I look forward to seeing him on the pitch and hope the excitement lasts longer than the first game.

Interesting about your friends, Grande — the Galaxy must be counting on the fact that most of America is like them, if they hope to get that $ back (esp if Beckham continues to have trouble staying healthy). My mind is just blown by the $ involved.
And now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to search for info on Figo’s dietary habits. (If he eats fries with mayo, we’re over.)

Okay, I’m reading this clever exchange and all it’s doing is making me wish my comments were working. My life will truly begine the day I am called a spiteful, unimaginative hack.
I live for the day when that is once again a possibility.
(Handled well, btw.)
:-) xoxo
