Figo Watch: Oh, For the LOVE OF GOD

[Edited to add the above image (thanks, Bob): Photographic evidence or clever use of a cardboard Figo cutout?]
I never thought I would see this day, but I’m officially sick of talking about Luis Figo. Who knew such a thing was even possible? All of this transfer drama is really wearing me out, but I feel like I have to follow the saga to its conclusion at this point, after investing so many words and hours in its development. So. The latest is that, while Al Ittihad briefly admitted last night that they’d been foiled in their pursuit of the player (the press conference with a Figo no-show was probably a good clue), they’re back with a vengeance this morning.
Negotiations were originally stymied by Figo’s salary demands (he reportedly wanted 70% of his salary by June, a condition to which Al Ittihad quite wisely refused to agree), but the parties apparently went back to the table yesterday and hammered out an agreement. Or according to Al Ittihad they did, so your guess, really, is as good as mine. Understanding that “official word” from Al Ittihad is a good as “official word” from The Sun, they just announced that Figo has, in fact, been signed, but that his deal with them will commence on July 1, when his current contract with Inter ends. No word yet on his salary under this new (imaginary?) one-year deal, but it’s sure to be astronomical.
As much as it pains me to say this, you know any further news will be reported here — I feel like I’m staring at a spectacular, Portuguese-Saudi train wreck.
