Figo Watch: The Agony Continues
By: Martha | January 2nd, 2007
Despite the fact that Al Ittihad’s official website still insists the club will unveil Luis Figo as its newest signing on Friday, the internets are offering some crumbs of hope for those of us fervently praying the whole thing is just an elaborate joke. First, there’s this report in the Gulf Daily News (it’s the “Voice of Bahrain,” don’t you know), which claims Figo will arrive in Bahrain today for six days of training with the rest of Inter’s first team. According to the article, he and Stankovic actually were in Dubai over the holidays, but they were merely celebrating, not signing massive contracts with Saudi clubs. While that sounds good, I’m not sure I’m particularly relieved, especially since the article is more of a “WOO HOO! INTER’S COMING!” advertisement than an actual, you know, news piece.
According to Goal.com, meanwhile, Figo is not only not leaving Inter, but he’s about to sign an extension to keep him at the club for another year. And this one has actual quotes from Massimo Moratti — it must be true, right? (Yes, I’m choosing to ignore the fact that Al Ittihad’s article about Figo’s move also features quotes from club officials.) Either Moratti called Figo and was so persuasive in his declarations of love and devotion that the player turned down the richest deal in football to stay at Inter or someone is going to extreme lengths to make us think he did, because the conversation was also mentioned in La Gazzetta Dello Sport. Either way, all of the profound emotional pain this drama is causing (What? It’s not killing all of you?) will be over in a few days, when Al Ittihad either introduce their very wealthy new Portuguese winger or they don’t.

I don’t know what is going on with Figo. I herad it from you first & read it @ FoxSoccer.com that he signed with Al Ittihad, but nothing was posted on inter.it. I Read today on inter.it that he will be part of the squad training in Bahrain and then playing against their National team. WTF is going on!?
I went to Wikipedia and typed Al Ittihad and it shows there that Figo has been added to their first squad roster but hasn’t been removed from Inter’s first squad on the same Wikipedia site, nor has he been removed from the roster on Inter’s official site. It seems that all reports contradict all reports.
Who is Yanking our chains on this one? I guess we’ll find out Friday.
Maybe Figo is a conniving genius and is going to get paid from multiple teams.

Can you see Figo running around with a bunch of sheiks? Nothing against sheiks, but I just hope he hangs in Italy just a little longer before he hangs up his boots.

I don’t get it either, Paolo — usually club officials have some idea who they’ve signed, so you’d have thought the Al Ittihad website thing was fact. But now it’s all over the place that he’s staying at Inter (fingers crossed). We’ll have to search for photos of tonight’s training session to see if he’s in them …

It was in the Seattle Times a couple of days ago that he was going. (The Times prints something like three separate short paragraphs on soccer each week in the “other sports” section. How humorous if one of those paragraphs was wrong.)

More from the Gulf Daily News. Either they are excellent storytellers or they have a scoop.
“I have no intention of giving Figo away to any club. We still need his services and as we speak, he is certainly staying with us until his contract expires at the end of this year,” said Mancini.
