Figo Watch: What a Difference a Week Makes

By: Martha | January 3rd, 2007

Did I leave the oven on?Though the folks at Al Ittihad are oddly silent this morning, everyone else and his brother are all “Figo? To Saudi Arabia? Don’t make me laugh.” As if, you know, just a week ago all the same outlets weren’t telling us that his bags were packed and he was on his way. Ah, football. Such a crazy world.

My question, now that we’re sure he’s staying, is how close Figo actually came to signing with the Saudi club. We know for sure that he’s been in Dubai — it wouldn’t surprise me if he went there with the intention of signing that outrageous contract and only came to his sense after hearing from Moratti, maybe only a day or two before he was due to put pen to paper. It’s easy for everyone at Inter to sort of shake their heads sternly and act like nothing was up, but I bet it was a very near thing indeed — and that there was a grain of truth in those Beckham rumors, too.

Whatever the hell went on behind the scenes, though, the fact is that Figo is still an Inter player and, yes, the Figo Watch is at an end. (And there was much rejoicing, on both counts.) We are now free to focus our energies on other grumpy transfer targets like Cassano and Ribery, and to wonder whether Milan will end up buying anyone at all.

  • Thanks for the info, Waleed -- I'll see if I can dig up any confirmation about the vacation home thing.

Actually the fact that Figo was in Dubai is very significant to this whole deal. Figo has been going there on vacation since his RM days. So it did not surprise me at all that he was there with the Stankovic family.

I am not 100% on this but I am pretty sure he has a vacation home there.

  • And now, Martha, you owe it to your public to find a pretty little picture of a fully-haired Canna. So your devoted readers can make up their minds for themselves.

Oh, I'm firmly in the "pro-hair" camp. I'm as superstitious as the next person, so I understand keeping the bald because it was good luck during his amazing 2006. But this is Canna--he needs hair.

  • BWAH! I'm glad we've got our fingers on the pulse of international affairs, Louise. (So to speak.) So, just so I can keep an eye on the situation: Do we WANT him to have hair or not?

The words of the late Gerald Ford were never more appropriately paraphrased: "Our long [inter]national nightmare is over."

Now that you're settled the Figo issue, I return to my "Is Canna actually growing his hair back?" watch.
