Did Flachi Sacrifice His Career For One Totally Awesome Party?

As you may or may not recall, Sampdoria’s Francesco Flachi was immediately suspended in late February when traces of cocaine were found in the pee he deposited in a testing cup after his team’s January 28 match with Inter. (Which should probably be factored in — who doesn’t need a little pick-me-up when you’ve got to play that juggernaut?) His second sample tested positive as well, and Flachi’s not seen the pitch in the past two months as a result of an indefinite ban.

Now, it appears, he’s going to be out for a whole lot longer, if CONI has its way: The drug czars of Italian football recommended a two-year suspension for the striker, and have turned the matter over to FIGC, the body apparently tasked with actually handing out bans.

Needless to say, the 32-year-old Flachi’s career would be over if he was suspended from the game for two years. However, given the power of the appeals process in Italy, even if FIGC adhere to CONI’s recommendation and hand down the long ban, it seems extremely unlikely Flachi would serve the entire thing. Plus, since that Adrian Mutu was out “only” seven months for his little cocaine debacle (albeit in England, not Italy), it’s not unreasonable to assume the final suspension will be closer to that duration.
