Flachi Screws Up. Again.

By: Martha | February 21st, 2007

Stupid Flachi.Though it wasn’t talked about much in the English-language press, Sampdoria captain Francesco Flachi missed two months early in the season thanks a FIGC-mandated ban. (I didn’t even notice it had happened until he suddenly reappeared and I did some digging to find out where the hell he’d been.) Seems Mr. Flachi was caught on tape trying to find out the results of other teams’ games before they happened. (The depressing and not at all surprising existence of that information is an entirely different story.) Not, oddly enough, so he could bet on the games and win money, but in order to pass the information along to a gambling ring, the members of which presumably were willing to compensate him well enough to make placing bets unnecessary.

Now, though, Flachi’s debt to society has been paid, and he’s been welcomed back to side with seemingly open arms. There’s a slight problem, though, because apparently his joy at being restored (back in November) led to at least one cocaine-fueled party, some time shortly before Samp’s January 28 loss to Inter. While that in and of itself isn’t a problem, the fact that The Man found the coke in his pee after that game is a huge one.

From what I can tell, Flachi immediately left Samp’s training ground when the club got word of the test, and he’s likely to be suspended just in case, ahead of whatever will come before a final decision — an appeal, one imagines, as well as the testing of a secondary sample. Based on what happened to Adrian Mutu after he tested positive to proverbial recreational drugs, Flachi could be out a whole lot longer than two months this time.

Well, this might create an opportunity for first team minutes for the Ex-RBNY youth player, Ferrari. Seriously, that’s his name.

Never fear, tmc, I’m all over Ferrari! (So to speak.) He actually has already made his first team debut — he played briefly in a Coppa match — but it’d be nice indeed to see him turn out in Serie A.

Nice - I hadn’t seen the earlier post. Would love to see the kid do well, and hopefully open up more opportunities for American players in Serie A (I think it is only Lalas so far).
