Former Mentor Tipped to Replace Mancini (Maybe)

Ever since Roborto Mancini casually opened the door to his own departure by telling the press that an extension at Inter was “not a [mere] formality,” rumors have been rampant that he’ll jump ship, possibly for the big Russian money of Chelsea. As to who will slide into his seat at Inter, the smart money has long been on Jose Mourinho, a man whose arrival would really easy the pain of Figo’s departure. Well, for me anyway.
Today, though, the Corriere dello Sport suddenly decided that it’s going to be Sven Goran Eriksson who replaces Mancio, not Mourinho. Eriksson, who coached Mancini at Sampdoria and Lazio and later made him his assistant manager at Lazio, is doing a whole lot of nothing these days, which is what he’s been doing since he gave up the England job at the end of the World Cup. (Basically, he’s being Marcello Lippi, except without the glory and cigars.) According to the report, nothing formal has been agreed, but talks between an exasperated Massimo Moratti and the Sweden have assured that, should Mancini leave, Eriksson will talk to Inter before discussing any other job.
Of course, since it’s also being reported today that Eriksson will be the next manager of the Swedish national team (if the current coach resigns/is forces out/dies), it’s anyone’s guess which story is closest to the truth. Or, if you prefer, not entirely made up. The only thing that’s clear is that Eriksson really, really wants to hang out with Ibra.
