Galliani in a Bit of Nudge-Nudge, Wink-Wink With the Press

By: Martha | July 16th, 2007

WHAT?Tracked down by the press yesterday during a short daytrip to Forte Dei Marmi (a place name which translates quite delightfully to “Strongly of the Marbles”), Milan’s Adriano Galliani was in a frightfully good mood, holding forth in an very cheery way for a man under increasing attack by supporters who want him to JUST MAKE A MOVE ALREADY.

As has become his pattern this summer, the VP assured supporters and press alike that Milan will execute a big signing before the transfer window closes (though, he insisted, they really don’t need help in attack with Gilardino, Inzaghi, Kaka and Ronaldo more than capable of holding down the fort), and this time added that the player will come from a non-EU nation. Now, whether this means that his actual nationality is non-EU — as in, say, Samuel Eto’o, or Ronaldinho — or that he doesn’t have an EU passport — something that may or may not apply to the Barca duo (check the comments in the past few days for discussion on the status of their applications for Spanish papers) — Galliani didn’t say, which means we can’t really rule out any of the major names with which Milan have been associated so far this summer.

That said, because of his well-known class and respect for other clubs (I’ll pause here to give you some time to laugh.), Galliani refused to actually name his primary targets. When the press offered him names, though, he wasn’t above blinking once for yes and twice for no, and ended up confirming a set of five familiar names: Didier Drogba, Samuel Eto’o, Alexander Pato, Ronaldinho and Andriy Shevchenko. In addition to those five, however, he also let slip the existence of a super-secret sixth name which he refused reveal, even under threat of torture. Mmmmkay, Adriano.

I’d spend some time trying to guess who the mysterious sixth is but, frankly, I’m not convinced there is one. Galliani loves the sound of his own voice and knows he can say anything he wants and get away with it; he’s certainly not above fabricating here and there for the same of a bit of intrigue. (And, what do you know — front page of La Gazzetta yet again!)
