Newbies for Genoa and Fiorentina (Juve Get Nothing)
By: Martha | January 4th, 2008
Finally, transfer are starting to trickle through. Granted, the most noteworthy so far are the ones Juve aren’t making (Branislav Ivanovic? Nope, sorry. Ever Banega? Nope, too late.), but it’s only a matter of time until something big happens. Right, Milan? Until then, though, we’ve gone some loans to digest.
Speaking of Juve, Domenico Criscito and Ruben Olivera are both moving to Genoa today, as the club tries to bring some permanence to their stay in Serie A. For Criscito, it’s a return to the club for which he was a defensive force last year, playing a crucial role in Genoa’s promotion and earning himself a U-21 spot in the process. He’ll doubtless settle in right away, though his arrival will mean a reshuffling of the Genoa backline, and possibly the departure of someone on loan. Olivera, meanwhile, has only two appearances for Juve this season and will be very happy to have a chance to make an impact elsewhere. He’s been on Juventus’ books since 2003 but has spent most of that time either on the bench or out on loan (Or, just for a bit of variety, beating the crap out of opposing players, something of which I can find no video evidence. Since he was suspended seven matches for it, though, I assume it happened. Help!). He did, finally, make something of a place for himself at Samp last season and can obviously perform at a high level when he feels like it; any appearances he makes at Genoa will be bonus for Juve as they try to figure out what to do with him.
In Florence, meanwhile, the Viola are welcoming Piacenza striker Daniele Cacia, half of whom they bought last summer; it was always understood that he’d join the Viola this month. Still only 24, the former U-17 and U-19 international has been at Piacenza since 2000 and, after several spells on loan, has played regularly for them during the last two seasons, scoring an average of a goal every other match. The fact that the Viola bought part of him obviously means they’ve got faith in Cacia, but there’s certainly no guarantee he’ll see the pitch in Serie A this season — a lot probably depends on the health of the current team — but a bigger squad is always a good thing with the UEFA Cup and Coppa Italia still going concerns.

Shame about Criscito; poor kid makes one mistake against Totti and gets benched for 6 months. Now, I know Totti’s not exactly National Team material, but he IS pretty good and HAS scored a few goals this season, so it’s not like Dom got schooled by a total scrub…
But honestly, I don’t understand this move unless Tinkerbell is bringing in a new defender. Besides SuperGiGi, Juve’s not well covered at the back… There’s been times when we’ve exposed like Britney Spears some games.
As for Olivera, I could have sworn he was already on loan somewhere else. In fact, I vaguely remember thinking that both times he sneaked onto the pitch.

Who’s the Totti character again?
(Is there an upside to Olivera? Do you think Juve are hoping they’ll be able to sell him to Genoa for a little profit come summer, if he makes himself marginally useful?)

I’m sure they’d like to off-load Ruben to anyone, Genoa included. With Marchisio and Paro coming back this summer, we’re not concerned at all with the midfield… well, as long as you assume Pavel’s concerns are limited to luster’n’shine and definitely NOT his age.
I really love this very young and very Italian Juve, even if we’re only in third place. Truth be told, we’re only 8 points behind a stellar Inter with a mercenary budget that dwarfs our own. And if you look at our few shortcomings it’s quite obvious that the defense is the problem, which leads me to imagine that if we had signed one or two world class defenders this summer we’d be top of the table.
oh, and where’s the coverage on the new investigation against Inter?
btw, I meant to mention that for their New Year’s Eve edition the New York Post (or maybe it was Newsday) ran that pic of Ibra’ZINGARO surf side in miami, part of a collection of sightings of celebrity who are on New Years vacation…
Did YOU have a hand in that? You must have connections the rest of us can’t even begin to fathom.

Are there defenders coming in, then? What’s the word from the land of the Juve forums? (And do they plant stories in the ones on the Official Site? Don’t lie, I know you’re there right now.)
I heard about the Zlatan pimpage, but not only did I not do it, but I was out town and had to do my ogling over the internets. The expansion of his domain to include NYC is very impressive indeed.
Link me! The only investigation I’m currently intentionally ignore is the Moggi one (and I’m doing that for you).
