Giornata 31: A Tale of Two Revivals
By: Julian | April 3rd, 2011One a team, one a player, both best told via video.
The Stadio Sao Paulo is usually a fortress: Napoli have won at home eleven times this season, and have only lost twice. Lazio however threatened not just once, but twice, to send the side to their third home defeat of the season. And then, Gli Azzurri woke up.
Napoli simply won’t roll over. They’re closer to Milan than Inter by two points, which means that a Scudetto is still easily within reach. And tantalizingly, they still have to the nerazzurri, on the penultimate day of the season. Has there been a better player in all of Serie A this season than El Matador? He now leads the Capocannoniere charts, tied with Toto Di Natale but ahead based on the fact that he’s scored one fewer rigore. It’s largely down to him that this fantastic Napoli team are far greater than the sum of their parts.
The Champions’ League should be the minimum for Walter Mazzarri’s side, for on the back of Edinson Cavani, they dare to fly once more.
The other revival this weekend came from a most unlikely source: Fabio Grosso. A player normally so bad that Juventus fans question their coach every time his name is on the starting eleven. Yet, against Roma, the former World Cup hero provided two assists that allowed Alessandro Matri and Milos Krasic to net and secure an away victory.
Both are simply rolling back the years. Napoli are playing like it’s 1990, and Grosso as if it were 16 years later. The two are living in the past once more in the best way possible. By repeating it.
