Good News, Bad News on the Totti Front
By: Martha | March 13th, 2007
First, the bad news: To the surprise of no one, it’s been revealed that Francesco Totti once again will not be in the Azzurri side for the Euro 2008 qualifier against Scotland, to be played in Bari later this month. (He did, however, send his “affectionate regards” to the lads, so there is that. I’m sure they’re all thrilled.)
And now, the good news: FIGC announced that Totti will be available for national team selection starting next season, something that definitely was not a foregone conclusion. There has been some speculation (By, um, me. Among others.) that, given the likelihood that his incredible form is due in part to the extra rest he’s getting by not playing for the Auzzurri, the aging (for a footballer, anyway) Totti might take this opportunity to just slip into international retirement. Plus, there was that quote about how he’s got “better things to do” than play for the Azzurri — that didn’t exactly suggest he’d be returning to the team any time soon.
But all the worry, it appears, was for naught because, assuming his head doesn’t fall off between now and next September, he’ll be in the side for the crucial September matches against France and Ukraine. Woo hoo!

Please tell me that is Franco’s kid. Creepy if it is someone else’s.
Yeah, he’ll be back in time beat les bleus into a fine paste. Is there another qualifier after the March game before September?

MWAHAHHAHHAAAA Laurie! At least we can hope it won’t be as ugly as the Sept match.
Muddia, there are a few games at the end of August, but Italy’s not in any of them — after March they won’t play another qualifier until the 2007-2008 season has started.
