He truly was a great defender, extremely correct and a great leader. I think he had the respect of all fans regardless of their loyalty, as it was surely the case with me, being a Roma fan. You almost felt sorry as an anti-Juve fan because you just couldn’t bring yourself to dislike him even when he was playing against your team, much like Javier Zanetti, or Cannavaro, who managed to fully represent their teams while being perfect professionals.

Where have all the Italian defenders gone? It surely doesn’t seem we are producing as many players of the caliber of Ferrara or Cannavaro anymore…

Great article, Francesco. I agree 100%, Ciro is one of the most underrated players in Italy and is rare in football, a genuinely great guy. Marcello Lippi…how many years have they worked together now? At Napoli, then twice at Juve, and finally with the Nazionale twice. I think he’s very much like Conte in that bad luck with the Azzurri is the reason most don’t remember his greatness.
