Great Serie A Games: Milan-Juventus 1996/1997
By: Francesco | December 9th, 2009
In this week’s Great Serie A Game (which doesn’t include Roma), we go back to the 1996/97 season, April 6, 1997 to be exact. Milan, who had won the Scudetto the year before under Fabio Capello, were going through a disastrous season. Uruguayan manager Oscar Tabarez took over in the summer, and was sacked midway for bad results. In came Arrigo Sacchi, who had just led Italy to elimination in the group stage at Euro ‘96 and decided to give Milan another try after all the glory in the early 90’s. He couldn’t right the ship either, and Milan wound up finishing an embarrassing 11th place. Juventus, led by Marcello Lippi, on the other hand would go on to win the Scudetto after a long battle with Carlo Ancelotti’s Parma at the top. They wound up winning by two points. Game story after the jump.
This game was just total domination by the Bianconeri. This was one of Milan’s biggest losses ever at the San Siro, and truly showed the demise of Arrigo Sacchi. One of the best tacticians of all time was just defeated in every single way in this game by Marcello Lippi. This game also features goals from a young Christian Vieri, Zinedine Zidane, and Vladimir Jugovic, with Milan’s consolation coming from Marco Simone.
