Great Serie A Games: Roma-Juve 2003/2004

The Great Serie A Game posts continue with Roma-Juve 2003/2004. The 2003/2004 season was an interesting one. Milan, fresh from a Champions League victory and with some new young Brazilian player named Kaka, were dominating Serie A. While Marcello Lippi’s Juve looked to be favorites to combat the Rossoneri to the Scudetto, it was not the case. Instead, Fabio Capello’s Roma were breathing down Milan’s necks all the way until the end. Francesco Totti and Antonio Cassano had formed a special partnership, where everything they touched turned to gold. Ivan Pelizzoli in net looked to be the next Buffon, some unknown Brazilian named Amantino Mancini started to shine, and they played smart, organized, fun football. Lippi’s Juve on the other hand struggled to perform. Even with the additions of players like Fabrizio Miccoli and Nicola Legrottaglie and the dynamic duo of Del Piero and Trezeguet up front, the Bianconeri just weren’t the same Juve, and Lippi couldn’t seem to work his magic anymore. Juve wound up finishing a disappointing 4th place, and Lippi left the Juve bench to take over the National Team (and he was replaced by Capello). Game Story and video after the jump.

Basically this is one of the more entertaining Serie A games of recent years. Two master managers of the Italian game, Capello and Lippi, face off, and Capello gets the better of the Lippi. Totti was in fine form on the day, and was all over the pitch. Roma struck early with a shot from Olivier Dacourt, and went into the half 1-0. In the second, Cassano wins a penalty and Totti converts for the 2-0 lead. Cassano scores another and makes it 3-0. Juve get a penalty and Trezeguet tries to convert, but Pelizzoli keeps the clean the sheet. Roma kill off the Bianconeri with another Cassano goal, who goes and kicks the corner flag, which became his trademark celebration. This game is also famous for Totti’s hand gesture (pictured above) towards Igor Tudor in the dying minutes of the game. Tudor was complaining about something to the referee and Totti told him to be quiet, as Roma was winning 4-0, waving 4 fingers in his face.

    Yeah it just means Totti was afraid to leave Rome and deal with competition for a starting shirt

    Alessio, obviously you know nothing of what binds a man’s heart to his hometown. Totti was a born Roma fan. His love for the shirt is so strong that he never left. Haters can say what they want about him wanting to be the big fish in a small pond & all that jazz, but that’s all it is – hate. Well, this is a moot point really because why am I going to argue with a Juventino? You guys wouldn’t know honest passion & love of playing in the shirt if it hit you in the face … since y’all sold your souls to the Devil already. But I’m sure y’all have heard enough of that by now, even if it never gets old for the rest of us.

    Yawn! Totti loves his hometown club so much that he continuously talks about all the times that he could have left for bigger clubs.

    Totti = Assbag

    Should I even bring up the whole ADP-contract situation of a few years ago? I think that is a true “assbag” move, or whatever you call it.

    How much does ADP get paid now when Juve is in a great financial situation? How much does Totti get paid now when Roma is broke? Totti’s a clown and a greedy one at it.

    And I think that’s a good idea Francesco hahhaha.
    BTW for future use I think Roma-Napoli @ the Olimpico in ‘07 -’08 was one of the greatest games I’ve seen (at least recently)

    When was Del Piero a bitch about his contract mate? His only complaint may have been about the length of contract being offered. But I don’t think “bitching” is a proper term to use for Del Piero and any contract impasse.

    totti is a better player then del piero period, and this is comin from a milanista, u can argue about petty stuff about the other too all u want but when it comes down to who u’d pick on ur team, i’d pick totti over del piero everytime

    That’s great Matty T, but your club also picked Dida over Buffon. Twice.

    Rome (the city) is overrated in general, and especially by Romanistas. Good god

    honestly, the 2000 european cup final should just speak for itself. del piero did everything in his power to lose that game, despite totti setting him up with countless one on ones.

    jonkon: “he did everything in his power to lose that game”? LMAO. He had a bad game, I’ll give you that. But to say that”he did everything in his power to lose that game” is like saying “Poland did everything they could to hand their country over to Germany during WWII”, lol it’s a blasphemy.

    ADP’s is very nice, but Ilary is in a class by herself.

    trying to make light of it all. Plus Del Piero and Totti aren’t enemies, in fact they’re actually friends. Now if this were a Totti v Nedvad discussion, then all bets are off. Let the insults fly.
