Great Serie A Games: Roma-Lazio 2001-2002

Since this weekend is the derby, I thought I’d make the Great Serie A Games post a derby. We go back to the 2001-2002 season, Roma are the defending champions and take on Lazio in March of 2002. Roma wanted a second consecutive scudetto, and were fighting on top with Juventus and Inter all season. This is the season where Inter looked to have finally won the their first scudetto since 1989 but on the last day of the season collapsed to Lazio and Juventus took advantage with Roma finishing second and Inter third, all three clubs separated by a point. So this was an important game for Capello’s Roma, who had to beat their rivals to continue to hope for the scudetto. Game story after the jump.

This game is famous for being one of the most one-sided derbies of all time. It is also famous for Vincenzo Montella scoring 4 goals on the day. The 5th goal was scored by Totti on one of his trademark cucchiaio shots, beating Peruzzi from a good distance. After he scored he revealed his “6 Unica” (You are unique) t-shirt, originally thought to be dedicated to the Roma fans, but later discovered to be really dedicated to then girlfriend and now wife Ilary Blasi. Lazio’s consolation goal came from Dejan Stankovic.

LAZIO: Peruzzi; Nesta (1′ st Gottardi), Mihajlovic, Couto; D.Baggio (1′ st Poborsky), Giannichedda, Fiore, Pancaro; Stankovic; S.Inzaghi (30′ st Liverani), Crespo.
Bench: Marchegiani, Mendieta, Lopez, Comazzi. Coach: Zaccheroni.

ROMA: Antonioli; Zebina, Samuel, Panucci; Cafu, Lima, Emerson (39′ st Assuncao), Candela; Totti; Montella (30′ st Cassano), Delvecchio (15’st Tommasi).
Bench: Pelizzoli, Aldair, Cufrè, Guigou. Coach: Capello.

REFEREE: Rosetti

GOALS: 12′ pt, 29′ pt, 37′ pt e 19′ st Montella, 8′ st Stankovic e 27′ st Totti.

A better Palermo-Juventus win is the 1-0 win in 2005, when newly-promoted Palermo beat the "old" Juventus 1-0 at home thanks to a goal from Franco Brienza. I wonder how long Moggi was on the phone for after that game.

This week was going to be Juventus-Torino 3-3, but I changed at the last minute since there's the derby this weekend. I promise the next couple of posts won't include Roma haha. I've tried to sway away from my Milan bias as much as possible, even picking Inter games twice.
