Greedy, Greedy Milan

By: Martha | January 2nd, 2007

Scarecrow Eto'oNot content to cling to the middle of the table, Milan are at least talking a big game as the winter transfer window opens. In addition to their on-again, off-again romance with Real Madrid’s Antonio Cassano (Put in terms we can all understand, Cassano is Jordan Catalano to Milan’s Angela Chase: They know he’s bad news, and yet they can’t tear themselves away from his dreamy eyes goals.), the club has been linked with practically everyone under the sun, from Tomas Ujfalusi to Massimo Oddo and Ricardo Montolivio. Now, they’re hauling out the big names and talking about summer transfers in an apparent effort to distract us from the fact that they’re not doing much of anything at the moment. On the Milan radar for the summer? No less than Samuel Eto’o, Didier Drogba and Luca Toni. (I’ll pause here while you weep with laughter.) Dubious press reports take the Eto’o part most seriously and indicated that, as you might expect, Barcelona are not interested in parting with the striker. Gee, ya think? As a result, Milan are said to be readying a Galactico-style bank-breaking bid that Barca will find themselves unable to resist. Good luck with that, Milan.

If that doesn’t work out, though, they might instead bid for Barca defender Juliano Belletti, offering a fee of about €5 million. A young(er), Brazilian replacement for the ancient (but still spry) Cafu is not a bad idea at all, particularly if Milan can’t get Oddo — this is a deal that actually both makes sense and might be within reach.

I think the Eto’o to Milan thing is even more ridiculous than the Messi to Inter thing (although Moratti’s obsession is more disturbing). Everyone at the club knows that he’s vital and irreplaceable, which means he won’t be sold for love nor money.

As for Belletti, it’s a good idea, as you said, but he’s a hero for Barca now after scoring that goal in the CL final, and the fans would be in an uproar I think if he was just allowed to leave. (And to be honest I like having him around as cover for Zambrotta.)
