Hide the Children, it’s a Cocaine Epidemic!

By: Martha | March 12th, 2007

Say hell to my little friend.Man alive, what has gotten into footballers these days? First Sampdoria captain Francisco Flachi was suspended with immediate effect (though I believe we’re still waiting on that second sample) for testing positive for cocaine during a routine post-game drug test. And now, just a few weeks later, we’ve got Messina keeper Nicolas Caglioni busted in exactly the same fashion. What gives?

Since the sudden discovery of cocaine on the Italian peninsula clearly is not the answer, I think it’s clear we’ve had a dangerous outbreak of stupidity in Serie A. Did the drug tests that take place after each game somehow slip the minds of these two gentlemen? Really, one almost hopes they did, since the alternative seems to be the high school student’s rationale to everything they’re not allowed to do, otherwise known as the “Oh, I won’t get caught” approach. Which we all know has always worked ever-so-well, for both busted sophomores and people who face random drug tests at the workplace.

Lemme ask you something, guys: While I’ve no doubt that not everyone who was with you has been caught (yet), wouldn’t it be a good idea to try holding off next time, at least until you have a sufficient coke-leaving-the-system window before the next game? I mean, I’m sure it was a really crucial high and all, but was it really worth this public humiliation? Doubtful. And, if that’s not enough, you’ve got Mr. Trouble himself, Adrian Mutu offering you advice and support. Now that is embarrassing.

I of course am not a coke-aholic, but I do think that they should at least let the justice system take care of that, otherwise just let the players do what they want with their money and brain cells.

I would be interested to know how the set-up differs from the American sports leagues, where all of this protocol is dictated by a collective bargaining agreement. I don’t know whether the Serie A/B players have a similar arrangement, because obviously there are competing interests between the league’s interest in clean players and the rights of the players themselves.
