High and Lows for Juve (They’re Still Cursed)

By: Martha | September 24th, 2007

Juve love.Juve fans can be excused for spending a lot of time yesterday running around and squeeling with joy. First, their incredibly annoying hero David Trezeguet scored his 100th Serie A goal, which for some reason makes people happy. Second, Vincezo Iaquinta’s late goal secured them a point off the best team in Serie A (at the moment, anyway), giving everyone a probably totally irrational Scudetto hope. Giant YAY!s all around, right?

In the background while all of that was happening, though, was the little issue of defender Jorge Andrade leaving the pitch in agony early in the first half with what was originally thought to be a torn ligament, but has now been diagnosed as a broken kneecap. Ow ow ow. For those of you keeping track, that’s the 39th player Juve have lost to injury or suspension so far this season, and by far the most serious — he’ll probably be out at least until Christmas, and might not return this season.

Now desperate to find a centerback who’s not 14 years old, Juve are going shopping, and may be looking to sign sometime-defender Luigi Di Biagio from Ascoli. Because of a weird contract situation, he supposedly could move to Turin this instant,* rather than waiting until January as everyone else (like, for example, Lokomotiv Moscow’s Branislav Ivanovic) would have to do. He ought to tread carefully if he does, though — Di Biagio is old enough that he might break just putting on the cursed kit.

*If anyone understand this or can tell me for sure that it’s a complete lie, please drop your knowledge in the comments and I’ll edit the post.

Cursed? How about that highly suspicious and illegal decision they were handed by the ref which resulted in their equalizing goal.

(I’m guessing you didn’t see the game, it’s pretty bullshit and very reminiscent of 2005)

That stuff never stopped, you just only notice when it’s against you. Luckily, karma made him miss. Plus, if you think it’s only Juve and only against poor Roma, you’re out of your damn mind.

juve got that throw in their favor and everyone is making a big deal like juve are still buying refs. but look at totti’s first goal martha. it was clearly offside. if that was trezegol that scored while he was offside that would make headlines. juventus got a throw in changed to their favor, roma were allowed to play after being offside. referees make bad calls all the time its just when juve are involved its cheating. juve paid their for their crime unlike milan, foirentina, and lazio so u all need to fuck off juve’s back!!!

    FORZA JUVE!!!!

Adam, while I’m not sure I’m convinced things don’t happen in Juve’s favor anymore, I totally agree that other (big) clubs get the benefit of bad/questionable calls on an unfortunately regular basis. And I take your point about what would have happened if Trezeguet’s goal had been from an offside position, particularly if it was late. Utter press frenzy, no doubt.

Karma made who miss? The ref handed Juve Roma’s throw in for no apparent reason and they scored. No missing involved.

And there hasn’t been one questionable call for Roma that I’ve seen this year. In fact, by and large the refereeing has been pretty decent up until yesterday (aside from Max Tonetto getting a yellow card for time wasting when there was an injured opposing player down and he was waiting for the trainers to come on – ridiculous stuff).

Totti’s was fair. Criscito has two arms draped and everyone’s bitching about Totti’s one arm? Come on. Typical Rubentus fans.

And when did Juventus pay for their non-refereeing infractions? Huh? Moggi being suspended? Get a clue man. This wasn’t just about on the field. Juventus should have spent at least 3 years in B or forced to rise from C2. The real scandal was Juve only having to spend one year in Serie B. What they did changed the landscape of the sport in their favor. That punishment was a joke.

Martha was talking about the penalty given to Nedved (which was perfectly legit btw) and missed by Del Piero, not the throw Chris.

I know that. But that’s not what I had been referring to.

I don’t HATE him, Adam, but he’s the sort of striker I don’t like (the ones who wander about for 90 minutes and then accidentally score the winner), and his entitled, asshole-ish attitude just infuriates me — I find him very hard to take. Sorry.

Pippo’s the same way, Marco — I’m not denying that they’re incredibly useful, they’re just not the sort of players I like, and Trezeguet’s attitude makes our relationship that much worse. (And SOME of them are accidental (first CL goal for Inzaghi, for example), but even I can admit those happen because they get themselves into the right positions more often than now.) I can’t help it, I just prefer the diggers who gracelessly bust their asses. Well, them and Zlatan.
