High Culture for the Inter Crew
By: Martha | December 8th, 2006
I could be misunderstanding the Google translation of this article (though with phrases as clear as “Five debuts in five various ones sample,” confusion would seem nearly impossible), but I’m pretty sure La Gazatta dello Sport reported yesterday that Marco Materazzi, Luis Figo and Julio Cruz went to the opera. Seriously — they all saw Aida (directed by Franco Zeffirelli!) at La Scala, which is very posh indeed. Whether this was a man-date, something arranged by the club (What with the San Siro being the “La Scala of football” and all, the cleverness of a group trip is nearly irresistable), or a giant, towering coincidence I don’t know, but I like it. The thought of the three of them hanging out is so odd it seems like it MUST have been a club-ordered appearance — Matrix and Cruz seem like polar opposites to me, Cruz is so contained and low-key, whereas Materazzi is all flailing emotion. And Figo is, well, Figo. Call be crazy, but they don’t strike me as a group that would share a special, opera-going bond.
Whether the club made them go or not, they seem to have enjoyed it — when the press accosted the trio during the interval, Figo called the experience “A dream” (aw), while Matrix praised the production as “beautiful.” Cruz, meanwhile, was his typical silent self. (Well, either that or he was in the bathroom.) You notice, by the way, that no one from Milan was at the event. If you’re in the bottom half of the table, you’re not allowed out after 8pm unless it’s for training.
