How am I doing?
By: Francesco | September 2nd, 2008
So it’s been roughly 4 months since I took over the reigns of the Italy Offside. I just wanted to see what the general consensus was about how am I doing. And who best to ask than the loyal people who actually enjoy (or maybe don’t enjoy) reading my musings about calcio. What am I doing right? What am I doing wrong? What can I improve on? Should I resign? etc. Feel free to suggest ideas for posts and such as well. Leave all your comments in the comment section and I look forward to hearing from you.

So far so good.
I still miss WAG of the week though

Exactly, my sentiments, we need WAGS to make this a complete site…Other than that, bravo

I look forward to your updates Francesco. But yes; WAG of the week is missed.

I think you’re doing a great job so far Francesco. I read most of the Italian offside blogs (even though I don’t comment on most of them), and this one’s been one of the ones I visit most often. Keep up the good work

I’ll be bluntly honest Francesco… you’re no Martha, but you’re doing okay. :)
I’d wish you’d update the blog more often, and include more match reports.
On the upside, the 4-post season preview you did was absolutely fantastic :) (but use paragraphs!!!!!!!!!)

I think you’re doing well. I would say post more, but with the season only just starting up again after the summer (and you having been away) I don’t know that it would be a fair criticism. I’m sure it’s a lot harder to come up with substantive posts in summer, when transfer market gossip is generally the most exciting thing going.

Bravo!! I think another interesting element would be if you made reference to (not get) political nature that calcio plays in Italian life.
To the outsider it may be interesting to note the North/South clashes. Moratti’s political and industrial connections (Remember the TIM phone scandal), etc.
There is a great chapter about it in The Dark Heart of Italy by Tobias Jones.

your blog is always a great read. You write with the sanity of someone who really thinks about the game and tries to give as unbiased a perspective as possible. (So dont go all crazy on us at some point!)
Sometimes though I noticed that you write really long paragraphs (eg., team season preview). It would be easier to read if you could split into sub-topics, or something so that it doesnt look intimidating to someone who may not have so much time…
But again, great job!Posted from

Pretty much the same views as everyone else. You’ve been great so far, and you comment with a great deal of knowledge, authority and sense on the issues. But perhaps some distractions like the old ‘WAG of the week’ slot would be welcome :)

Quality stuff, Francesco. It’s hard for me to provide criticism when work/family obligations preclude me from posting more often than I’d like.
You can WAG, I guess, which is all fine and dandy, but it’s not really something I care too much about. I think one idea might be to create a regular weekly feature which would allow a more in-depth analysis of either a particular player, issue or team. You should elicit the help of other serie A offside bloggers on this point. I’m thinking something other than the match preview/postgame banter… stories such as tifosi behavior which is now at the forefront given my team’s travel ban for the season… or the mini-exodus of Italian players plying their trade outside of Italy (Toni, Grosso, Oddo, Barzagli, Cannavaro, Rossi)… the increased level of competition in Serie A… hell, I don’t know, I’m just rambling.
I look forward to your reading your stuff and I don’t care so much about paragraph composition or any of the other stuff. The articles are free, they’re written by people who don’t do this professionally, and the main thing is to generate discussion… maybe I don’t set my standards high enough, but I think the site is better for your contributions.

Thanks for the comments guys. I realize I didn’t post as much in the summer but I promise with the start of the season I will post a lot more, especially with all the news and events will be happening. I’ll try and bring back WAG of the Week, and the “10 things I learned” idea is a good one. I’ll also try and make Video of the Week more of a regular thing, and maybe even do some club and player profiles. I’ll try my best to do a lot better (and I’ll use paragraphs Marco ;)!)

francesco – you’re doing a great job!
BTW – if you bring back WAGs, you need to get some posts for the female italian fans as well!
regarding ideas, gian @milan had started weekely posts about milan legends – having one on italian legends may be good, esp for people like me who’ve been hooked onto italian football only for the last 4-5 years and hence dont know a lot about the earlier players except their names
keep posting!Posted from

You’re doing well, and thank you for taking time out to do it.
As an aside, I’m in the UK and noted this weekend that I couldn’t find any terrestial or satellite station which is broadcasting Serie A. Channel 5 had it last season. Does this mean that there will be no footie shown in England? Can anyone advise??
