Huzzah, Crazy Zamparini is Back!
By: Martha | October 1st, 2007
Don’t get me wrong — it’s not that Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini went anywhere, rather that we haven’t had a good explosion from his lately, particularly of the “I hate my gaffer and want him to die!” variety. Instead, we’ve had to make do with random pronouncements about things like Amauri’s status with the club (He could leave someday. Gee, really?), and the disrespect his club gets from the press, a complaint that got a whole lot less interesting when Roberto Mancini started singing the same tune. Bor-ing.
Now, though, the crazy is back with a vengeance: Zampa has ripped coach Stefano Colantuono over Palermo’s dismal loss to Empoli yesterday and challenging the manager to sort his team out, for the moment leaving the “or else” unspoken. Granted, getting crushed by a team that hadn’t previously managed to win a single game is pretty embarrassing, but Palermo are tied for fifth in the league, just four points off the top of the table — for anyone not named Zamparini, it’d be a bit early to hit the panic button. If you’re Zampa, though, things are different, and he’s had it up to here with just being a skilled team: “I am waiting for Colantuono to turn this group of excellent individuals into a team … I just saw a flimsy performance which was our worst of the season. Our position in the table is the result of moments of class rather than us playing well and Colantuono’s sole task is to make us into a unit.” What, Stefano, you thought all you had to do was get results? Please.
Actually, I suppose it’s possible Mr. Crazy has something here — Palermo looked great for stretches of their Week One loss to Roma, but I’ve not see them since then. Is there really trouble on the horizon? Kevin? Anyone? Bueller?

Although the start could’ve been better, i think Zampa’s going crazy a little too early. if he’s already going mental about this, what’s gonna happen when Boleslav wins 0-3 on thursday? Exploding faces and such?

There is no trouble it is just Zamparini has a short fuse.

Short fuse, Taib? He has no fuse. What a tool. I love Colantuano..if for no other reason than his snappy white shirts and clean shaven head.
Losing to Empoli is no shame. They’re a decent side who were hard done earlier in the season.

Joe. I stand corrected. Half the news about Palermo is his stupid rants rants against the team and the coach.

No need to panic, just Zampa being Zampa.. I even agree with some of what he said. I watched the game, it was a pretty lackluster effort.
I think Colantuano has done a great job so far, though. I don’t understand his inclusion of Miccoli. Big mistake, I was throwing shit when I saw Cassani was our last sub. Saving him for the UEFA cup draw is a big mistake for me, we still have Brienza we could use as a striker. Plus, we only need a draw and are playing at home. I know UEFA is somewhat important, but as Ive stated in my blog, our main goal should be league this yearPosted from

As a palermo supporter, I’m not going to constantly rant about how crazy Zampa is… Yes, he is peculiar, but he wants to succeed at the top level. He proved that by keeping Barzagli and Zaccardo with the addition of Miccoli in the offseason. Therefore, he’s still alright in my book. And besides that, Colantuano knew the soap opera he was starring in before he took the job.

Taib, if you’re right about the press only producing stories about the disfunction of Zampa, then Zampa is right. Palermo isn’t getting the repect they deserve. They have a pretty damn good football team, too. Once they really gel, watch out.

And Martha, once again you beat me to the punch. I apologize, but as a pawn in the business world, sometimes i don’t have the most time.

Kevin, no worries — please don’t think I’m stepping on your toes, I’m touching on stuff from lots of clubs here and I’m sure you can cover it in much greater detail than I. (Anyway, I find Zampa awfully hard to resist.)

It’s all good, Martha..I’m always glad to see my aquile in the headlines!!

Kevin: They never gel because once the results go a little crappy then Zamparini fires the coach. How many coaches has Palermo had under Zamparini?

I don’t have that many fingers

Ah, craziness from Zamparini. It truly is football season again. But I don’t think it’s a short fuse or complete lack of fuse as much as it is that he just has no filter. When he talks to the press, he says whatever he’s thinking at the moment.
