Ibra to Sweden Coach: “Suck it, Lars.”

By: Martha | January 31st, 2007

Ibrahimovic SwedenApparently Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s personal statute of limitations on pouting hasn’t yet been met, because he’s skipping yet another Sweden match: Ibra was called into the side for next week’s friendly against Egypt but, once again, he refused to go. Ever since coach Lars Lagerback sent him home from the team’s camp for breaking curfew before playing Liechtenstein game last fall, Ibra has refused to turn out for a national team match, skipping the two Euro 2008 qualifiers that followed the match he was forced by Lagerback to miss. (Much to Ibra’s secret dismay, Sweden won both games, so his ever-so-mature punishment of Lagerback was all for naught.)

Ibra said last year that he would return to the team in 2007, so he either a)doesn’t know what year it is, b)doesn’t care, c)was lying, or d)desperately wants Lagerback to grovel and beg for his return. If it’s option D, I’m going to go out on a limb and say that, based on the gaffer’s statements yesterday, Ibra will be waiting a long time: “I don’t believe in trying to convince a player who does not want to play.” Go Lars! I’m going to come right out and say it: I love this man. I know nothing about him at all, but anyone who will send his team’s best player home from a match that matters because of a fairly minor rules violation (Ibra staying out too late, but he didn’t drink or, you know, rob anyone) has my undying respect.
