In Other News, the Delle Alpi is Gonna Be Mighty Pretty Someday
By: Martha | February 6th, 2007[Since life in Italian football is moving on despite everything, I'm trying to branch back out into less depressing news. Which, honestly, is a relief. I didn't feel even the slightest urge to cry while writing this post!]
Both Juventus and Torino are playing at the Stadio Olimpico this season, because their normal home, the Delle Alpi, is being renovated. Or rather, it was supposed to be renovated — all plans to that end were temporarily scrapped by calciopoli, and everything has been on hold all season. A shiny new plan, however, was approved by the board this week, and if it ever happens, the Delle Alpi is going to put every other Italian football venue to shame.
Not content to just host football matches, the renovated stadium would be “A stadium-cum-entertainment venue capable of ‘living’ seven days a week, of welcoming families into an ultra secure environment and of hosting major international events.” Ooooooooh. (Yes, it says “ultra.” But not in a bad way. This post is depressing news-free.) In other words, it’d be a Sporting Complex worthy of the most ambitious American and European cities. Plus, if the mock-ups are anything to go on, it would be gorgeous.
The only problem is that government and league funding for the renovation — expected to cost at least £85 million — appear to be contingent upon Italy being awarded the 2012 European Championship. Which, given the events of the past week, is increasingly unlikely, leaving the Old Lady in her crappy old stadium for the foreseeable future, albeit with large, framed images of the renovation that never was hanging on all the walls.
