Inter Eying Yet Another Youngster to Replace Figo
By: Martha | June 12th, 2007
From the moment Luis Figo signed his now-dead deal with Al Ittihad, pretty much every bright young midfield thing has been rumored to be an Inter target as they pursue a replacement for the totally irreplaceable (she says, without a hint of bias) Figo. And, even though he’s now sticking around for another year, the quest remains in place, so the papers are still busy finding youngsters to step into his shoes.
Today’s Figo, Part Deux is none other than the current Zizou, Part Deux: Samir Nasri, whose form for Les Bleus of late surely has him on every transfer list on earth, not just Inter’s. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, though, he is “the blow of the centenarian.” Can’t argue with that, can we?
In its more coherent moments, the Gazzetta article suggests Figo’s decision to stay on for another year has made the seduction of Nasri possible and, while the player wants to stay at Marseilles for the coming season, he’s theoretically open to a move next summer. Additionally, with the recent departure of Franck Ribery for Germany, it would be almost impossible for the French club to let another starlet go this summer no matter how much money Inter were willing to throw at them, so Nasri was never going to be an immediate option.
So the lad will stay in France for another season, getting more experience and increasing in value by the second. And then, twelve months from now when Figo finally retires, Inter will make a bid so massive Marseilles will have no choice but to accept it. Which sounds great in theory — who in their right mind would say no to Nasri? The problem, of course, is that a year from now Milan, Juve, Man U, Chelsea and Bayern will all have exactly the same plan, so Inter might well have to wait in line with their wheelbarrows full of Euros.
