Inter Love Talkin’ Transfers
By: Martha | January 11th, 2007
Man, you’d think a team with 58 wins in a row, on the verge of running away with the title would have better things to do than fill the air with transfer talk — or, as is currently the case, loud denials of transfer talk — but that seems not to be the case with Inter Milan. After endless speculation that the club would be the destination of massive names like Gianluigi Buffon (who, it appears, will be going SOMEWHERE this summer) and even little Antonio Cassano, Inter chairman Massimo Moratti is sternly telling the press that his club is perfect the way it is, thanks: “There is no unit to reinforce. She is a balanced square, would be an error to remove this equilibrium with new players.” Or, if you prefer your news not mangled by a translating bot, that all areas of the team are strong, and there’s no need to fix something that ain’t broke. (Though me, I think “She is a balanced square” has much a nicer ring to it.)
Oh, and also? They’re “really not interested in Beckham.” Ha ha. I hope at least this denial is sincere.
It’s unclear, though, whether these ringing denials will hold true during the summer, because Moratti is very careful not to say he’ll never bid for the players in question. For example, his statement regarding Buffon reads in part “We have an excellent goalkeeper, whose name is Julio Cesar, and another with a great deal of experience called Francesco Toldo.” Which, you know, is true. But having “no intention of signing another keeper” certainly leaves a lot of room for, say, dumping Toldo and then snapping up Buffon. Similarly, while declaring that Inter has no intention of buying Cassano, Maratti nevertheless was careful to declare his great love for the player. Can you say … loan deal?
