Champions League — It’s Almost Knockout Time
By: Martha | December 6th, 2006
Yesterday while I was away from the internets and my precious cable TV, Roma secured the point they needed (plus two more) to advance to the knockout stages of Champions League for the first time, where they join Inter (who played a strong squad yesterday and drew against Bayern, ending up second in Group B) and Milan, both of whom secured their places during the last round of matches. Milan play Lille today but they’ve already won the group, while Lille need a win to have a chance to advance. Despite the fact that Milan have nothing at stake, there ought to be an awesome crowd at the San Siro — the club was selling tickets for €1. One Euro!? At that price, the place should be packed to the rafters.
With the Italian teams all set, the most interesting match of the day is probably Man U v Benfica — Man U need only a tie to go through but if Benfica can manage a win, they’ll go through alongside Celtic, leaving Man U with nothing. And, really, what’s better than seeing Alex Ferguson lose, and inevitably blame someone else? There’s also a potentially good game in Group G, where joint leaders Arsenal and Porto are meeting in Portugal. The problem, though, is that they both need a tie to go through (and a loss could mean ending up in third place, if CSKA Moscow beats pointless Hamburg), so instead of an awesome battle of two exciting teams, it’ll probably turn into a lesson in risk-free football.
No matter what happens today, the draw will be December 15, three Italian teams will be in it, and there will be mouth-watering matches to follow. How can you not love Champions League?
