Inter Throw in Chivu Towel, Eye An Old Argie Friend

By: Martha | July 4th, 2007

VeronEvidently sick to death of all that damn Spanish interference, Inter have officially withdrawn from the Chivu Sweepstakes. Because this is big time football, the decision had to be announced in the international press with trumpets blaring and confetti flying rather than via a simple, private phone call down to Rome, but the result is the same as it would have been under those circumstances: If the Romanian leaves Roma, he’s leaving Italy. So, just maybe, we won’t have to talk about him anymore. (And there was much rejoicing.)

Not content to slip entirely out of transfer discussion, though, Inter immediately turned around and began making unofficial eyes at one Juan Sebastian Veron, a player who spent two years on loan at the club before returning to Argentina and his boyhood club of Estudiantes (all of this while owned by Chelsea). Though he’s now 32, Veron’s contract with Chelsea is finally over, and his form in the Argentine league over the past season was good enough to earn him a recall to the national team; he’s part of the Argie squad currently tearing up the Copa America.

While this deal is not exactly a slam-dunk (Veron is old, and also very closely tied to Estudiantes now), it does seem plausible. Not only did Veron play probably the best football of his career in Italy, but he’s also very tight (some bitter-types say too tight) with Roberto Mancini, who would surely welcome his old teammate’s return. And, as an added bonus, he and Adriano hate one another, so he could help drive Mr. Partypants from the club!

Kirby, I feel you on the Adriano front. I’d love to be there when he learned of the signing (if it ever happens).

In practical terms, it’s dumb, esp if they’re looking for someone to replace Figo — Veron is nearly as old as he is. I can’t help but give in to the nostalgia though, and I’d love to have him in the side if they could sign him to a one-year deal at a non-obscene cost.

By the way, I think last week you asked me about where Chivu’s money would go. If you missed it Rosella said all of that money will be used for new players. It was immediately followed by the thunderous thump of jaws hitting the floor all throughout Rome.

I’ll need to see it to believe it, but they have spent a lot of money by their standards this summer already. Even buying two players whose total value exceeds 10m, though the payments are staggered. The woman had no clue what she was doing two years ago when she started, and I think she may be coming around a little. Breaking even on Chivu, buying high-quality players (esp Barusso) and doing some damn fine business while we’re at it?

Frozen pigs are flying over hell right now.

Not really, there is a huge gap in what Chivu wants and what Real is willing to offer (like 1.5m per year). Chivu’s agent will hold out unless he’s sent to Inter or gets Inter money. Real could pull a Barca and say “you’re not that good, fuck off” and everything is back to square one.

Veron scares me. I know, he’s an Argie and so I should probably try to like him, but - scary.

Oh crap. Now I’m stuck wondering which ones you came across. Please at least tell me they weren’t obscene.

    Nothing too obscene.

But I’m pretty sure I learned a lot more about you than I wanted to know. :)
