Inter v Messina: Why Yes, That Is Nine in a Row
By: Martha | December 17th, 2006
So, at halftime, I wrote this:
I don’t know how Inter players or fans can stand Materazzi. His persecution complex combined with an emotional age of about eight makes him a constant liability, and the majority of the time he really seems to be more trouble than he’s worth. Today, he gets into a tussle with the badass Messina coach over a throw-in. Moronic on the part of both men, no doubt. But Materazzi, who immediately got a yellow because of the incident, would NOT SHUT UP. He spend at least three minutes shouting at anyone in the area about how right he was, doing nothing more than putting himself at risk for a red, and thus putting his team at risk as well (see the Milan derby for evidence of what his idiocy can do to his team). The entire Messina team just stared at him or averted their eyes entirely, as most people do when faced with a crazy man. His own team, meanwhile, was clearly disgusted, with Julio Cesar finally dragging him away and giving him what looked like a strong talking-to in the process. I’m going to go out on a limb here and wager than the translation of the keeper’s words was something like “Nobody effing cares, you goddamn moron. Shut the hell up.”
And then, seconds after my indignant rant was saved, the damn Matrix comes right out and scores a stunning goal. Sigh. Don’t get me wrong — the man is still an ass, but goals like that are going to make up for a whole lot of cards and juvenile idiocy.
In non-Materazzi news, Figo finally played a full 90 minutes (Woo hoo!), Inter continue to roll, Lindsey Dean continues to talk as if players substituted ages ago are still on the pitch (And, if you’re into misinformation, you can hire him yourself!), and Ray Hudson continues to brutalize the English language. Today’s gem: “Maxwell — really fills his pants in that box.” Is there any doubt this man is at the top of his announcing game?

Is there anything “The MATRIX” (Materazzi) can’t do? What a goal from the World Champion (can never getting enough of saying WORLD CHAMPIONS) Centre Back.
Bravo Matrix….you misunderstood beautiful bastard!

Ok it seems the general concensus here is that everyone hates Inter. I love them and have ever since I was 12 years old & met the whole team and practised with them. I was even at the San Siro this year to watch them (round 4 against Chievo). It was my first time and certainly not my last. That being said and I guess being a fan of the Nerazzurri, how do you not love Materazzi? He has a passion for the game and the team that seems to be unrivalled. He plays tough and there is nothing wrong with that. He plays the game the way a central defender should. You want to get in the minds of the opposing attackers and you want them to be thinking when they get the first touch that there is a possibility that you are going to get a hard knock. His play this year and his play during the World Cup should have his critics silenced, but it hasn’t.
He did nothing wrong yesterday in trying to retrieve the ball for the throw in. By right it was his ball. Giordano picked up the ball and all Materazzi did was out stretch his arms assuming the ball would be handed to him. It was not so Materazzi, not saying anything, tried to grab it and received a slap to the side of his head for trying to get something that, by rule, was rightfully his. His caution was absurd.
This seems to be the talk, and the fact that Materazzi is labelled as a trouble maker (and the fact the he is Interista) this is getting more attention than it deserves. What about what Lucarelli did to Pandev yeaterday after Pandev scored? That was ridiculous and he should have been red carded, but Materaazzi trying to get ball so he could throw it in was much worse…. oh yeah, they should have suspended him…. Maybe relegate him to Serie C2 until he can act like a man….
Anyhow Materazzi plays with passion and plays for the shirt. He is a great player and is very versatile, his acrobatic goal yesterday was awesome!! He is a guy you would love to have on your side, and anyone who doesn’t have him is content to say he is a trouble maker and he is this, that, or the other thing. He comes up big and always seems to in the light of controversy.
