Inter v Siena: Yawn.

By: Martha | December 2nd, 2006

Burdisso or IbraMaybe it’s because I’m not massive Inter fan or something, but good lord was that game a drag. There were some nice passes — among others, Stankovich whipped a ball clear across the field while on the run that was impressive — and a few vaguely exciting moments — mostly featuring keepers falling down and penalties shouts of various validity — but overall it was just a big wet blanket. Honestly, I slept through some of the first half. And, while I had a crazy late night of lying on the couch watching the Knicks’ game, I’m pretty sure it was the game’s pace that put me under more than anything else.

Complaints aside, however, I did learn two interesting things (And that’s while I was awake — imagine all the things I missed when I nodded off. The mind boggles.) The first is that Siena striker Mario Frick is a Lichtenstein international. No lie! The announcer mentioned it about four times, so clearly this is an achievement he finds very significant. And OK, the guy is the team’s all-time leading scorer (with, um, seven goals), but let me ask you something: Do you think anyone from Lichtenstein’s national team could get into even, say, the US side? I mean, really. There are some things that you can leave unsaid, or at least mention only once, as a bit of trivia. Don’t brag for a player about that while he’s trying not to get killed by The Matrix. And my second lesson from the game is equally odd and exciting: Little-used Inter defender Nicolas Burdisso’s “OH MY GOD I SCORED!” face is exactly like Ibra’s, and it’s deeply disconcerting. For the first three seconds of his celebrations, the announcer, his teammates, and everyone at home were sure it was Ibra who had scored. Then he closed his mouth and let his eyebrows return to normal, and everyone went “Wait, this is a different guy — he’s a defender, not a striker! And I actually like this dude!”

This will surely shock you, Simon, but if you read around the site, you’ll find that not only do I quite like watching Inter play when they’re good, but Luis Figo is my favorite player on earth. Plus, I’m a quite devoted reader of the Inter website — who knew, right?

Figo is not anymore the player that won Golden Ball years ago. He still has a great touch but he is too slow for modern soccer. And to be a reader of Inter website doesn’t make you in an Inter fan. I’m just sorry to read that you like to write only against Inter Milan. After that, I still have my opinion, and I can recognize what kind of editorial you write.
