Inter: We Want Messi. No, Wait, Deco! Eh, Whatever.
By: Martha | March 21st, 2007
Not content to let Milan have all the fun, Inter are now allegedly also getting into the race for a Barcelona player or two. According to a recent story in La Gazetta dello Sport, the nerazzurri have turned to the Spanish club in their desperate search for a replacement for the departing (and entirely irreplaceable) Luis Figo, and Lionel Messi is at the top of their list.
However, since even teams as powerful as Inter Milan have to periodically return to the real world in which the rest of us reside, they are admitting that landing the young Argentine genius might be a bit beyond their capabilities at this point, given his role at Barca and the fact that the club would sooner sell their mothers than their Messi. (And you know how much Inter love their Argentines — for them to give up on this guy, it’s got to be an absolute certainty that he’s staying put.) As a result, Inter are reportedly turning their attention to Deco who, though his current contract’s buyout is a massive £53 million, is expected to be available more cheaply — possibly for as little as £14 million — given his advancing age (he’s almost 30) and associated decreasing value. Additionally, there has been some discussion of making the deal a partial swap, possibly involving Walter Samuel and/or Adriano.
Hell, anything that gets rid of one or both of them is a great deal as far as I’m concerned, and if Deco can come in at the same time? That’s a win-win!

Ick. No offence to any Inter fans out there (or indeed Argentina supporters, which I am myself) but Samuel’s last trip to Spain was trauma enough for everybody concerned. And Adriano? Does Ronnie need another Brazilian to party with?
