It’s a Bird … It’s a Plane … It’s Super Ref!
By: Martha | January 17th, 2007
Say goodbye, friends, to errors in Serie A — Super Refs are coming! The problems in the past, you see were caused not by corruption, but rather by the presence of mere mortals in those hideous neon kits. Now, thanks to the clever thinking of Cesare Gussoni, the new head of the Italian Referees Association, all of that will change.
Under Gussoni’s leadership, the number of referees eligible to take charge of Serie A matches will be reduced from the current 41 (Serie A and Serie B officials are in the same pool) to just 20, all of whom will receive intensive training and do only Serie A games. Additionally, these referees will be available to officiate abroad should, say, the Premireship decide they want to change things up a bit. By the same token, Gussoni is making noises about being willing to allow foreign officials to take charge of Serie A games, which might be the worst idea in the history of mankind. Imagine a referee accustomed to La Liga going to Italy and trying to adjust — or, worse, apply the standards he uses in Spain.
Honestly, narrowing the pool of Serie A officials is a no-brain. However, since there is no start date for any of this in the articles I can find, you’ll have to forgive me for being suspicious that all the big talk and new ideas will fade away as the public attention diminishes. (Plus — that name! Unless these 20 heroes will be wearing capes, there’s really no excuse for it.) It wouldn’t surprise me a bit if, five years from now, there were still 40-odd guys in the pool of officials, most of whom move regularly between Serie A and Serie B.
