It’s an American Invasion!
By: Martha | January 19th, 2007
Hot on the heels of the arrival of NY Red Bulls prodigy Gabriel Enzo Ferrari in the Sampdoria youth team, fellow American starlet Giuseppe Rossi returned this week to Parma — a club he left during the 2004 financial crisis — on loan for the rest of the season from Man U. (Yes, ok. He’s played Italian youth teams and didn’t train with the US because he wants to play for the senior Azzurri. But he’s from New Jersey! That so makes him American.)
What with Parma pretty much sucking, Rossi is hoping to play regularly, something he’s not been able to do at either Man U or on loan with Newcastle; he expects to make his debut against Torino this weekend. Meanwhile Ferrari, who, thanks to bizarre MLS rules could not have played for the Red Bulls without entering the draft (?!), is already training with the senior squad at Sampdoria. U-S-A! U-S-A!

It’s like going back in time to when Alexei Lalas signed for Padova. Hopefully neither of these young boys will inflict any of the guitar playing on us that he used to!

That reminds me of when you used to be able to buy a variety of football shirts in JJB (sports store here in the UK).. You used to get all the regular ones like Italy, England and then they’d throw in a few wildcards in there.. I remember picking up a ‘96 Padova top in there once from about the time Lalas was playing for them..

Good for them. As an Italian-American, I would probably prefer to play in Serie A if I could as well. If only because you are bound to get more hot chicks. I mean lets face it, MLS players (Landon Donovan excluded) probably get the hand-me-downs from all the other major sports here.

Well, and as a trade-off for having a hot fiance, he has to be Landon Donovan — no woman could be hot enough to make that bearable.

It’s funny. I find Donovan to be one of the world’s most annoying players to watch on the field. I don’t know why. Is it possible to play arrogant?
But in the couple of interviews I’ve seen he’s seemed kind of sweet. (And in the interview I watched with his fiance, he did seem a bit whipped. Which, for a stud-muffin superstar, was oddly endearing.)

On the flipside, if I were an Italian, like that #1 NBA draft pick, who excelled in hoops or, dare I say, American football, I’d want to play here. Couldn’t you see Gattuso as a fierce strong safety in the NFL.
