It’s Been a Busy 24 Hours on Italy’s Management Carousel

Not only was Daniele Arrigoni un-fired this morning, but last night Roma’s Luciano Spalletti finally signed the long-discussed contract extension which will keep him at Roma for the foreseeable future. No details of the deal have been revealed yet, but it’s safe to assume it included a well-deserved raise for making Roma the prettiest (and I’m not talking about Totti) club in Italy.
Alongside those two bits of good news, however, there’s yet another firing to report. Despite having the club very much in the running for a Champions League spot, the job of Udinese gaffer Giovanni Galeone was put in danger recently by consecutive losses to Palermo and Milan, and it was an open secret yesterday that Alberto Malesani was in line to take over the job. (If it fact opened up — talk about awkward.) It comes as no surprise, then, that the trigger has been pulled: Galeone is gone, and Malesani is taking charge of his first training session today.
Can you think of a more perilous job that football manager? No matter how successful you are, you’re always in danger of being fired, whether it’s for a single humiliating loss, pissing off the fans or, say, bringing your dog to a press conference. Man alive — thanks, but no thanks.
