Juve v Inter: Honors Even
By: Martha | November 4th, 2007
A draw was probably a fair result for this one, a match that saw each team spend some time on top but which, overall, was nervy and tense and extremely stressful. Juve were all over Inter at the start, and the Nerazzurri spent a good portion of the first half heading the ball out of the box or, if you’re Crisitian Chivu, just kicking it really, really far. Julio Cesar wasn’t called upon to do much in goal, but that was no reflection of the activity of Inter’s backs, who were wildly busy for much of the first 45 minutes.
When Inter did get the ball down and managed to possess it, the moves inevitably ended with someone going offside. The final count (include one that ruled out a goal by Esteban Cambiasso) was in the low teens somewhere, but I think whoever was keeping track missed about 15 offenses, because it was almost comical how often the flag went up. Lucky for Inter, though, Cordoba and Samuel were holding it down in the back, which gave the rest of the team time to sort themselves out and try to settle down. I’m not sure that really happened in any significant way until the second half, but the Milanese managed to stay onside once and Julio Cruz put the chance away, settling a long pass from Cesar on his chest and slotting it smoothly past Gigi Buffon just before the halftime; the goal was definitely against the proverbial play, but Inter went into the break up 1-0.
Inter seemed to calm down once they had the lead, and the entire team played with a lot more poise in the second half. Javier Zanetti, in particular, was immense in the midfield, and though Juve most likely had the edge in possession, the Nerazzurri defended comfortably, and were always threatening on the counter, particularly when David Suazo and his terrifying speed came on. Both the Honduran and Zaltan (who let everyone on the pitch inside his head and failed utterly to make an impact) squandered great chances to double the lead, though, and were made to pay for their wastefulness about 10 minutes from time when substitutes Vincenzo Iaquinta and Mauro Camoranesi combined (albeit with a little help from Samuel’s heel) to draw Juve level.
The pace of the match slowed a lot in the last 10 minutes and things got a little nasty mostly, it appeared, because Giorgio Chiellini couldn’t get Zlatan to respond to his taunts and grabs (Chiellini played him great the whole match, and Zlatan responded to the heightened emotion of the whole thing by shutting down completely and becoming preternaturally calm — it’s no wonder his former teammate was confused). There were a lot of arguments in the last few minutes, as well as particularly bad-looking foul by Chiellini on Zlatan, but despite the eagerness of Nico Burdisso (he of the busted nose against Valencia) to start something, the referee kept the peace and no one did anything spectacularly stupid, either before or after the whistle.
Also: Pavel Nedved picked up a card in the second half and will be suspended (again) for Juve’s next match, while Inter saw both birthday boy (he’s 104) Luis Figo and Maicon leave the match which injuries, which is awful news heading into another round of Champions League play.

It was such an intense match, and Juve’s defense is really damn good at setting the offside trap. It was comical to see Zlatan completely space out and shut down playing against his former team. Lots and lots of squandered chances by Inter here. Juve didn’t quite get to the goal as much. I was really disappointed to see Figo go, and for me Burdisso was invisible through most of the match, and the times when he were there, all I could see was him losing his temper.
Well, Juve deserved this draw (though I would have loved to see Inter win), but it was a really exciting match (and the exchange between Chiellini and Ibra was hilarious)

It’s too early on Monday morning for my brain to process “Zlatan” “not responding to taunts” and “preternaturally calm” all in the same sentence.

This one was a very exciting match for my part. It’s good to be back to full mCalcio and Serie A duties, and what best way to do it than the ‘Derby d’Italia’. :)
Oh, if anyone taped the game, I would absolutely LOVE a screenshot of the look Chiellini gave Zlatan towards the end of the game. Priceless “I own you” stuff.
P.S. All hail Camoranesi

Burdisso wasn’t on long, Jennifer, but I agree with you — I can’t figure out a)why Mancini is insisting on playing him in the midfield, and b)preferred him over Olivier Dacourt who is actually, you know, a midfielder, and is tough if nothing else.
Lisa, it was unimaginably sad to watch, all that self-control and depressing faux serenity.

It was a good match that inter deserved to win in my opinion. Everyone played really well. But one thing that i really don’t understand, why did Chivu just fall to the floor like that on juve’s goal? Why didnt he pressure someone? I just dont understand what happened there. If anyone could shed some light on that for me i would greatly appreciate it. I didnt think Cesar had the best game. I would have preferred Solari in the second half. Suazo for Cruz was the right decision. Burdisso on instead of Dacourt, well thats just strange. I hope Figo and Maicon are back soon. But what was wrong with Maicon? I didnt see when he hurt his ribs in the match(thats if it happened during the match?).

“why did Chivu just fall to the floor like that on juve’s goal?”
Because that’s what Chivu does in big games. He’s the worst big game defender in Serie A, if not Europe, and has the mental strength of cheap china.
Thanks for taking him off our hands.

I am not happy with the result at all. Inter could and should have won this match. They should have put it out of reach by the 65 minute mark but Buffon did his job, kept Juventus in it and then they scored a very lucky goal.
Inter’s midfield was driving me crazy too. Sometimes they moved the ball so well through the midfield and other times just gave it away very easily. Frustrating as hell. Juventus played a very dangerous style of defending, but to their credit they played it well and their timing and organization was on. A lot of the offside calls, while correct, were extremely close.
It was a decent match. Inter had more quality chances and should have won. They tried to settle in defensively and got stung by lucky goal. I had no clue why Chivu fell. A harmelss cross that went in high and the other defenders were going to let Chivu handle it. He falls and Iaquinta barely manages to get a head on it. The strike was not very good but defelected off Samuel’s shin, thorugh his legs and bounced up & over Julio Cesar, who looked like he would have had it. BRUTAL! But they all count. The match was played with a lot of emotion and nerves. I do think overall Inter were the better team and deserved. It was 2 points lost on the road instead of a point earned. I think Inter will win the return Match at the Meazza!

Well, wasn’t that game just a black eye to the world of Italian football? Nintey-odd minutes of one team playing up and down all out atttack and one team countering, with… err… the counter in a style-vs.-style, nervous, intense game. How dare those sub-human foreign player come into this league and raise the bar of competition and excitement! I, for one, am supremely indignant…
Okay, sarcastic rant over, but I had to do it…
1. How dirty did Chiellini and Nedved have to play in this game to get a point? Figo, if you didn’t know has a broken leg from the “tap” that Paaaaahvel (Suaaaaahhhve) gave him to the back of the legs. “DIRTY HARRY” Chiellini got the Goon of Game Honors (thats right, the GOGH! Say it loud and thats the sound yo make when the GOGH! hits you with a shoulder and a fist on a header)
2. All that said, good result for Inter. Tie the tough teams at half of the top of the table away from home, beat the easy teams (Heeelllooooooooooooooo Roma v. Empoli) at the bottem of the table and yours another Scudetto will be, young jedi…
